Mitt Romney to Back Israel on Military Action Against Iran

US presidential candidate Mitt Romney would back Tel Aviv if Israel were to take unilateral military action to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, his top aide has said.

Romney is in Israel as part of his three-nation tour ahead of the November presidential showdown. It is the Republican presidential candidate's fourth visit to Israel and is widely seen as an attempt to woo pro-Israel voters in the US.

"If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing that capability, the governor would respect that decision," Romney's senior national security aide Dan Senor told reporters.

The comments came ahead of Romney's meeting with top officials in Israel including Prime Minister Benjamin Nethanyahu and President Shimon Peres. Romney is also due to meet Labour leader Shelly Yechimovich, Kadima chief Shaul Mofaz and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

The Republican presidential nominee is expected to say that an aggressive approach is needed to avert any threat from Tehran which might be fatal to the existence of Israel.

In a speech to be delivered on 30 July, Romney will say, "When Iran's leaders deny the Holocaust or speak of wiping this nation off the map, only the naive - or worse - will dismiss it as an excess of rhetoric," according to Reuters.

The speech will continue: "Make no mistake: the ayatollahs in Tehran are testing our moral defences. They want to know who will object, and who will look the other way."

Romney's comments are in contrast with the political line of President Barack Obama, who is keen to convince Israel not to conduct a preemptive attack against Tehran.

Former Massachusetts governor Romney arrived in Tel Aviv after an unhappy trip to London, where he stirred up a hornets' nest by questioning the readiness of London to host the Olympic games.

?"There are a few things that were disconcerting [about the build-up to the Games]. The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of immigration and customs officials - [these are not] encouraging," he told NBC News.

Romney later back-tracked, applauded the work of the organising committee in bringing the Olympic experience right into the heart of London. "What I have seen shows imagination and forethought and a lot of organisation," he said.

Romney's next destination on his three-nation tour is Poland.

WANNA BET?

I wanted Andy Murray. I ended up with Usain Bolt.

My fault, apparently, though I still would have liked to have gotten 5 quid down on Murray at 4-1 to win the Olympic tennis gold. Sweet redemption it would be for Murray after losing in the finals at Wimbledon. Sweet for my wallet, too.

Unfortunately, the tennis had already begun, so the clerk at the William Hill betting parlor on Pentonville Road couldn't book the ticket. So I went with a parlay of Bolt winning the 100- and 200-meter sprints and Jamaica winning the 4x100 relay.

Betting is a national pastime in England, and William Hill and Ladbrokes shops compete every few blocks around London. It's also one of the few places that take Olympic bets ? Vegas doesn't book them ? on everything from Michael Phelps winning two or more gold medals (4/6 odds) to opening ceremony director Danny Boyle getting a knighthood for his work getting the Olympics off to a good start (even money).

On a bustling Monday morning at the Pentonville Road shop, there wasn't much demand for Olympic action. A couple punters (British slang for bettors) were watching a telecast of greyhound racing from Sheffield, but the betting window was otherwise unoccupied.

I got my money in on Bolt and his teammates (at 2/1 odds), then added a bet on Ryan Lochte to win the 200-meter freestyle (3-1) on a lark.

Proof, perhaps, that not all the Olympic action takes place in official venues.

Leadership Coaching: Elegant Courage Nurtures Self Esteem | The ...

By Mike Krutzaand Jodi Wiff

How Do You Feel About Yourself?

Self esteem is highly valued in our culture. Our healthy perception of ourselves is crucial in successful dealings and relationships with other people. How we face and contend with challenges is also primarily influenced by our self esteem. How do you feel about yourself? Your answer to this question impacts how you treat other people. What do you think of yourself? How do you see yourself? These will also determine how other people will perceive and treat you. Self esteem is fundamental for our survival as human beings, just like fear and anger, according to William James? studies in 1890.

Self esteem is to be bolstered- we?ve seen countless of resources about this topic. Nonetheless, self esteem as a characteristic has many distinctions. How do you differentiate self esteem from vanity? Sometimes people might think that they are asserting their self-esteem, but they are actually feeding their self- seeking vanity.

Self Esteem Is Controversial

Dr. Solomon Sheldon who studies terror management theories raised some questions about self esteem. He said that being self assured as a characteristic is controversial. It is a common belief that we need to be self confident and self assured to boost our psychological and relational well being. Nonetheless, some people believe that a positive self image is not very important and that it can even lead to people being socially insensitive and violent. Problems can result from high self esteem, according to Dr. Sheldon, especially if it equates to narcissism and it results to people being increasingly aggressive.

Clarify Your Core Values

Thus, in leadership, we have to draw the line between self esteem and narcisissm. Let us first define what a healthy, positive self image is. Your perception of yourself is bolstered because of your values, accomplishments and kindness and compassion towards other people. On the contrary, self- centeredness means a person regards themself so highly because of their fear of weakness or failure. It is being too self absorbed and the excessive, irrational drive to become the best. The irony of being too self serving and narcissistic is that it stems from deep seated insecurity and feelings of inadequacy.

A solid self esteem is a vital element of successful leadership. It comes from your core values. Have you clarified your core values and are you resolved to hold fast to them in both good and bad times? You need elegant courage to be able to do so. Courage is the essential virtue from which other important virtues are born, and it can nurture a healthy self esteem.

Why Aren't There Any Openly Gay Astronauts?

Web Exclusives | Space

The lack of even one openly gay or lesbian living astronaut in the history of American spaceflight may reflect the culture at the NASA astronaut office

Three hundred and thirty American men and women have served as astronauts since the start of NASA's human spaceflight program. Only one is publicly known to have been gay or bisexual ? Sally Ride ? and she kept it private until her death, yesterday (July 23), when her obituary on the Sally Ride Science organization's website stated that Ride was survived by Tam O'Shaughnessy, her "partner of 27 years."

As the first American woman in space and a scientist, Ride served as a role model for generations of young girls. Now, she'll serve as a role model for LGBT youth as well, said her sister, Bear Ride. "I hope it makes it easier for kids growing up gay that they know that another one of their heroes was like them," Bear Ride, who identifies as gay, told?Buzzfeed?yesterday.

Gay rights advocates say Sally Ride's addition to the ranks of LGBT role models will make a tremendous impact. "Role models are incredibly valuable for everyone, but I think especially for LGBT youth, who may be born into a family where they don't have an LGBT role model. It is so important for them to look out into the world and see they could be welcome in that world," Stuart Gaffney, media director at Marriage Equality USA, told SPACE.com. "Sally Ride will be that for them now."

Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin concurred, telling Buzzfeed, "The fact that Sally Ride was a lesbian will further help round out Americans' understanding of the contributions of LGBT Americans to our country." [Astronaut Sally Ride: In Her Own Words]

Ride's decision to keep her sexual orientation private reflects her very private nature, sources said. But the lack of even one openly gay or lesbian astronaut in the history of American spaceflight may reflect the culture at the NASA astronaut office. Although NASA does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, Michael Cassutt, author of five books and hundreds of articles about human spaceflight, said coming out would until recently have been "a career-wrecker" for an astronaut. "Not for any formal reason, but in the same way that any medical issue or even some kind of notoriety has been an astronaut career-wrecker," Cassutt told SPACE.com.

"Any issue that detracts from the mission is or has been the kind of thing an astronaut wants to avoid. It isn't NASA politics; it is NASA politics as practiced at the astronaut office," Cassutt said, adding that the office has often resembled a "military squadron."

A NASA spokesman told SPACE.com that astronauts decide for themselves what to reveal about their private lives.

"Certainly we try to be open with their professional activities and beyond that what they reveal privately is pretty much up to them," said the spokesman, who asked not to be named. Still, the fact remains that no astronauts have ever come out as?gay?or?lesbian, while many astronauts include mention of their husbands, wives or children on their NASA official biography pages. (As of today, Ride's NASA bio page was updated to mention that she is survived by her mother, with no mention of her partner.)

Cassutt said even though he suspects there are or have been some other gay or lesbian astronauts, and in spite of the progress made on LGBT issues, "I don't expect anyone in the current corps to be 'out' any time soon, assuming anyone is gay."

The implication is that even in 2012, a same-sex orientation could still earn an astronaut unwanted notoriety that would detract from a mission. Robert Pearlman, space historian and founding editor of collectSPACE.com?(a SPACE.com partner site), said the choice to shield one's sexuality "unfortunately cannot yet be labeled 'behind the times.' While there are a great many more people who are openly gay today, we are not yet to a point of universal acceptance," he noted.

Sprint Posts Q2 2012 'Earnings'

Sprint

Sprint has posted their Q2 2012 results and boy was it quite the bucket of information to get through. There's lots of numbers and some tricky accounting involved, but here are the main points:

  • Net loss of $1.4 billion, which calculates out to $0.46 per share.
  • Wireless service revenues of $7.3 billion for the quarter, up 8-percent year-over-year.
  • ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) growth of $4.31, the highest on record for the U.S. wireless industry.
  • Net postpaid customer additions of 442,000, with a best ever churn performance of 1.69-percent.

Now, let's talk about what those numbers actually mean. If you read into the press release, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse made the following statement:

The Sprint platform achieved best ever postpaid ARPU and customer churn that, combined with disciplined customer acquisition and cost management, contributed to our Adjusted OIBDA of $1.45 billion. Based on this performance, we are raising the 2012 Adjusted OIBDA forecast to between $4.5 billion and $4.6 billion.

That's a lot of fancy mumbo-jumbo to all of the non-financial types, but we can break it down a little bit. OIBDA means Operating Income (or loss) Before Depreciation and Amortization. Some more financial speak, we know, but bare with us. In basic terms, the OIBDA numbers don't include a lot of the required accounting, depreciation and expected future losses. This is the big reason why Hesse is quick to point out these OIBDA income numbers. They simply -- well, maybe not so simply -- paint a much nicer picture of Sprint's financials. Between Sprint's "Network Vision" and Clearwire investment alone, they have written-down $986 million in losses for Q2. OIBDA numbers, strategically, don't consider these losses because they do not actually influence Sprint's cash flow or bottom line this quarter. Sprint will be quick to point out that even though they technically lost $1.4 billion in Q2, in terms of cash flow and buying power for future capital expenditures and spectrum acquisitions, they're doing quite well financially.

Whatever the accounting technique, its hard to ignore the big red numbers coming through in Sprint's financial statements every quarter. Let's hope that their expanding LTE network and devices can bring them back into the black sooner rather than later.
