Historic old Jeddah awaits life-saving restoration

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - In the heart of Saudi Arabia's sprawling Red Sea port city of Jeddah, centuries-old buildings tilt and buckle above the historic district's narrow alleys, withering away in the absence of decisive action to protect them.

The seventh-century historic district, with its mud and coral town houses adorned with ornate wooden balconies, holds the only remnants of the traditional architecture of the Hijaz, as the western Arabian Peninsula is known.

But while Jeddah is building the world's tallest tower as part of a modernization drive, efforts to preserve its oldest area are faltering.

"Every time I walk and see these houses it hurts," said Abir AbuSulayman, who lives in the modern part of Jeddah but lobbies for the restoration of the old city.

"I wasn't born here or ever lived in the area but I can feel how important it is and I feel proud that we have real history."

Restoration efforts have been left largely in private hands because Saudi authorities cannot by law intervene to renovate the privately owned homes in the district. Locals say the government has not shown enough interest in resolving the problem, or in breaking a logjam in financing the improvement of the area's public infrastructure.

As a result, a quarter of the houses in the district's square kilometer have collapsed, burnt down or been demolished in the past decade because home-owners cannot afford costly renovations and have little interest or incentive to do so.

Houses where the wealthiest Jeddah merchants once lived are now cheap dwellings for poor foreign laborers, beggars and illegal immigrants. Of the historic district's estimated 40,000 inhabitants, fewer than 5 percent are Saudis, the district's mayor Malak Baissa estimated.

Webs of intertwined cables cascade down the houses' dilapidated facades while satellite dishes hang from their cracked walls and rusty air conditioners protrude from their rotting wooden balconies.

A previous effort to list the historic area as a UNESCO world heritage site, which officials say would jumpstart restoration work, failed in part because there was no realistic master plan.

The government plans to resubmit its application to UNESCO this month, and this time has included proposals to encourage home-owners to restore their properties under expert guidance with loans and other financial incentives, as is the practice in some other countries with huge restoration projects.

"We are very optimistic that once it is registered everybody will come forward and be enthusiastic about (the restoration)," said Abdulgader Amir, the municipality's vice mayor for strategic planning.

CONSTANT MAINTENANCE

Jeddah's humid climate rots the houses' wood and erodes their walls, meaning they require constant maintenance. Local laws stipulate that this be done with mud and coral limestone drawn from the Red Sea, using costly traditional building techniques.

"The house will deteriorate if there is no one to take care of it. Like an old garment, if you don't patch it up it will disintegrate," said Younis al-Jazar, among the few Saudi citizens who still live in the area, where he was born and raised.

Costs of restoration vary depending on the size and extent of damage to a house, but can range from 50,000 riyals ($13,000) to over 3 million. Jazar said regular maintenance on his family home costs at least 6,000 riyals a year.

The local property market further discourages restoration efforts: new buildings in the area can command rents of 50,000 riyals a year compared with 2,400 for old houses.

"They (owners) know they are sitting on a very valuable land in the city center. They want to get rid of the old houses to build new structures," Amir said.

Of 600 old houses counted a decade ago only 450 remain.

Although the central government has instructed the city to spend $53 million to help restore the public parts of the district, the money must come from the city's own coffers, Amir said.

This is something that Jeddah, where creaking infrastructure contributed to deadly floods in 2010 and 2011, and which is completely overhauling its transport networks, cannot now afford.

"We can barely cover costs, so it's like giving something but it is not real... But we will keep asking for it," he said.

The government has bought and restored some properties in the area, including a 13th-century mosque and the house where Saudi founder Abdul Aziz al Saud lived when in Jeddah, but officials say it would be too expensive to purchase more buildings so they are now planning to provide state loans.

FRUSTRATION

Adhering to an austere version of Sunni Islam which prohibits the veneration of objects, Saudi Arabia has until recently neglected and even destroyed many of its historic sites such as homes and tombs of iconic Islamic figures in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

It has now listed two sites, the Nabatean rock-dwellings of Madain Saleh and the ruling al-Saud family's historical capital of Diriyah, with UNESCO and is working hard to protect its heritage there.

"Here in the kingdom there was a lack of awareness and appreciation for heritage and we have, in ignorance, destroyed many sites including Old Riyadh ... but thank goodness we have passed that stage," said Ali al-Ghabban, the Vice-President of Antiquities and Museums at the Supreme Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, a government department.

Some Jeddah citizens and other people from Hijaz, which includes Mecca, Medina and the old port town of Yanbu, accuse the government of playing regional favorites, stirring old resentments dating to the al-Saud's conquest of Hijaz in 1923.

They point to the investment of at least $133 million in preserving Diriyah and compare it unfavorably with the continuing neglect of cultural sites in their cities.

Amir defended the central government's priorities, however.

"Anything historical that has to do with the government and its establishment is naturally important ... that does not mean that Jeddah is neglected. But it was just a lot easier to deal with Diriyah considering no one lives there, it is much smaller than Jeddah and the government owns the whole area," he said.

As the authorities consider how to proceed with restoration of the historic district, Jeddah residents like AbuSulayman continue to lobby for swifter action and monitor the development in the area as best as they can.

"We don't have the power to make decisions but we are here," she said. "We need help ... (and) we are willing to do more."

Drug resistance in E. Coli: 'Baby steps' can pay off big

Jan. 9, 2013 ? Rice University scientists have found that mutations of small effect can turn out to be game changers in the bacterial fight against antibiotic drugs.

The discovery came during an exhaustive, three-year effort to create a mathematical model that could accurately predict how specific mutations allow bacteria like E. coli to adapt to antibiotics like minocycline. The findings are detailed in a Dec. 10 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"As biologists, we tend to focus on big effects that result from big changes, but this study shows that bacteria don't have to solve the problem of antibiotic resistance in one giant step," said Rice University biochemist Yousif Shamoo, the lead researcher on a new study. "We were surprised to see that small mutations could make a big difference. In some cases, we saw that minor molecular changes could boost resistance by as much as 500 percent."

Despite the remarkable success of antibiotics, bacterial infections remain a leading cause of death, and antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens is a significant threat to public health.

Shamoo, professor of biochemistry and cell biology and director of Rice's Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering, said the study of antibiotic resistance offers opportunities to both examine complex cellular phenomena and address the "genotype to phenotype problem," one of modern biology's major challenges.

"We've sequenced hundreds of genomes, and we're finding that it's one thing to read the blueprint, and it's another thing to predict how the DNA in that blueprint will affect change in a living cell," Shamoo said.

Shamoo said that because a single antibiotic resistance gene can make big changes in whether a cell lives or dies, it is possible to make the connection between the gene and the cell's fitness to its environment.

To show that a mathematical model could accurately predict how specific mutations would affect E. coli resistance, Shamoo's team examined a gene called TetX2. The gene encodes an enzyme that inactivates the antibiotic minocycline. The researchers looked at the most likely mutations of the gene and found seven that led to increased antibiotic resistance. They then spent two years amassing a catalog of basic biochemical measurements for each mutant.

"If this organism were a car, then these enzymatic measurements would be the equivalent of things like the cubic displacement of the engine, the torque and so on," Shamoo said. "These are measurable variables, but by themselves they won't tell you the car's top speed or how fast it can accelerate from 0 to 60 (miles per hour)."

By measuring the performance improvements from each of the seven TetX2 mutants, the group was able to build a mathematical formula that accurately correlated the E. coli resistance with enzyme performance. To test the formula, the team measured the resistance of a new family of mutants and used the formula to calculate their enzyme performance metrics.

"Using the car analogy again, it's like we took one car and measured its top speed and acceleration using seven different engines," Shamoo said. "Then, we took the same car with an unknown engine and showed that we didn't have to open the hood and look to tell what kind of engine it had. We could tell that strictly by knowing its top speed and acceleration." By knowing how the car with the unknown engine performed on the race track, we could describe the engine without ever popping the hood and vice versa.

Shamoo said the research could lead to faster screening methods for resistant strains of bacteria, but the most immediate benefit is an improved understanding of how resistance develops.

"An example of that is this finding about the small steps," he said. "That was unexpected, and it tells us something fundamental about how resistance evolves. We still know that big changes can confer big benefits, but now we know that small changes can yield big benefits too. This tells us that we may need to look at things we might have overlooked in the past."

Co-authors include former graduate students Katarzyna Walkiewicz and Andres Benitez Cardenas, undergraduate senior Colin Barcorn, alumna Christine Sun and faculty fellow Gerda Saxer. The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Kresge Science Initiative.

'Catholics and depression' : News Headlines - Catholic Culture

CWN - January 08, 2013

In an interview with Catholic World Report, Aaron Kheriaty and Msgr. John Cihak discuss their new book, The Catholic Guide to Depression: How the Saints, the Sacraments, and Psychiatry Can Help You Break Its Grip and Find Happiness Again.

Kheriaty is director of residency training and medical education in the Department of Psychiatry at University of California, Irvine; Msgr. Cihak is a priest of the Archdiocese of Portland.

?Depression certainly affects our spiritual life, and our spiritual life is central to helping us prevent or recover from depression,? says Kheriaty. ?Depression is indeed a spiritual trial because it wounds us so deeply ? you could say that it is an affliction not just of the body but also of the soul.?

?We can know, with certainty and confidence, that God is our loving Father, that he is close to us and that he sustains us, even through painful trials and periods of suffering in this life,? he adds. ?We know also, in faith, that our suffering is not pointless, but can be redemptive when united to the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross.?

Is There Any Validity to Astrology? - Santa Cruz, CA Patch

I?ve been interested in astrology for as long as I can remember, and I loved reading my horoscope in the newspaper as a child.?

When I was a psychology student, learning about personality theories, I often wondered if there could really be something to astrology.

Although my psychology professors generally thought that astrology was purely nonsense, and despite having to roll my eyes whenever someone tries to explain all their problems because of ?Mercury being in retrograde,? it seems conceivable to me that there might be something to astrology.

Like many religious and mystical traditions, I suspect that any cultural system that survives over thousands of years, suggests that there may be something about it that our intuition recognizes as real.

I reasoned that human beings, like social insects, may have genetically-wired brain types, and that we may be born into social castes with certain personality traits, that when operating together, form an efficient, self-organizing social system.?

It seems reasonable to suggest that seasonal variations in solar radiation might influence our DNA, and hence the annual cycles of our genetic wiring, so that all social castes are equally represented in domesticated primate societies.

Just as ant, termite, and bee societies are composed of workers, queens, drones, etc., it could be that astrology is a primitive attempt to recognize and categorize these genetically-wired castes in human societies, and perhaps some day a sophisticated psychological science may evolve from this.

Like alchemy and chemistry, astrology and astronomy were once a unified discipline, and they began to split apart in the 18th century.

Astronomers, who are critical of astrology, often point out that the effects from the Heavenly bodies in the sky actually exert much less gravitational influence on us than the objects surrounding us here on Earth.?

Astronomers commonly point out that astrologers claim that people are ?ruled? by influences from the sky, and that this just can't be true; however, I think that these well-meaning astronomers may be missing the point.??

I agree, it?s doubtful that the stars and planets in the sky are influencing our lives here on Earth; however, I suspect that the same unseen forces that move the stars and planets in the Heavens, may also be influencing natural dynamics that affect our daily lives.

So perhaps, by studying the position of the stars and planets in the Heavens, we can gain some insight into ourselves.

Astrologer Rob Brezsny supports this idea, when he told me that, ?There are many astrologers who don?t believe that the planets literally shower down some sort of invisible influence on people.?

?I know that some astrologers believe that, but I would say that, at this point, a majority don?t,? said Brezsny, who also explains that it has been a tradition in many different cultures to look for signs in the natural world as clues for understanding our inner natures.

?The important thing,? Brezsny emphasized, ?is that the planets are signatures in the sky that can be read, have been read by experts over a number of centuries, and are correlated with specific tendencies in the human personality and in evolution.?

But is there any scientific evidence to demonstrate that astrology is real?

There have been a number of scientific studies done in an attempt to determine if there is any reality to astrology, although, unsurprisingly, the results appear inconclusive.

According to the leading scientific consensus, no predictive validity for astrology has yet been conclusively established.

Some critics argue that the results generated by astrology are so general that almost any outcome could be interpreted as fitting the predictions, and that astrology doesn?t produce testable results.

Others argue that scientific studies have already demonstrated astrology to lack validity, while others claim that additional studies, or even the very same studies, actually do demonstrate the validity of astrology.

For example, one of the most commonly-cited studies about astrology was conducted by physicist Shawn Carlson, while he was an undergraduate at UC Berkeley in 1985. This double-blind study, was published in the respected science journal?Nature.?

Carlson had professional astrologers attempt to match birth charts with California Psychological Inventory profiles, and looked at whether or not volunteers could match astrological interpretations, written by professional astrologers, to themselves.?

According to Carlson no supportive data for astrology emerged from the study, and he concluded that there was no evidence for the validity of astrology.?

However, according to technical writer Ken McRitchie, ?this study...contains serious flaws, which when they are known, cast a very different light on the study.?

?These flaws include: no disclosure of similar scientific studies, unfairly skewed design, disregard for its own stated criteria of evaluation, irrelevant groupings of data, rejection of unexpected results, and an illogical conclusion based on the null hypothesis,? writes McRitchie.

Most surprising, McRitchie states,?Yet, when the stated measurement criteria are applied and the data is evaluated according to normal social science, the two tests performed by the participating astrologers provide evidence that is consistent with astrology.?

McRitchie?s full analysis of Carlson?s study, and a summary of the research that has been found to support the validity of astrology, can be found here: http://www.theoryofastrology.com/carlson/carlson.htm

Physicist John McGervey also did a study that supposedly found no support for astrology, which is summarized in his book Probabilities in Everyday Life.

However, a 1961 study by psychologist Vernon Clark (published in the journal In Search), and a 1986 study by astrologer Neil Marbell (published in The National Council for Geocosmic Research (NCGR) Journal), both claimed to have found positive results that support the validity of astrology.

Putting these inconclusive, conflicting studies aside for a moment, if one experimentally entertains the subjective notion that astrology is real, one can experience some interesting results.

If one starts to study the personality characteristics of the different signs, and begins asking friends when their birthday are, many people agree, astrology can certainly start to seem uncannily real.?

Having one?s ?natal chart? done by a gifted astrologer, can also be a profound experience for many people, leading to numerous personal insights.?

A natal chart is an intuitive interpretation of the position of the Heavens at the time and place of one?s birth, that supposedly helps one to gain insight into one?s personality, psychological dynamics, and potential in life.

According to astrologer Antero Alli, you don?t actually have to believe in astrology in order to practice it successfully. Alli told me, ?After 30 years in the practice, I still don?t believe in astrology; I use it because it works.?

Alli added, ?And it seems to work best when used as a language, not as a philosophy or a belief system, or a religion, or a science. The purpose of language is not to solve life?s big questions. Like any other linguistic construct, the purpose of astrology is communication.??

Brezsny echoed this by saying, ?I think astrology, at its best, is about opening up the imagination, opening up the possibilities, by getting you to play with visions of what?s possible.?

?Astrology is not a belief system; it?s not a religion; it?s not a science. It?s a language of the archetypes that you can play with, and thereby get a read on the biggest possibilities that are available to you,? Brezsny said.

In any case, true or not, my love for reading newspaper astrology columns was gleefully resurrected when I discovered Brezsny's brilliant, irreverent, hopeful, and hilarious astrology column, ?Free Will Astrology.?

NASA's Kepler discovers 461 new planet candidates

Jan. 7, 2013 ? NASA's Kepler mission Monday announced the discovery of 461 new planet candidates. Four of the potential new planets are less than twice the size of Earth and orbit in their sun's "habitable zone," the region in the planetary system where liquid water might exist on the surface of a planet.

Based on observations conducted from May 2009 to March 2011, the findings show a steady increase in the number of smaller-size planet candidates and the number of stars with more than one candidate.

"There is no better way to kick off the start of the Kepler extended mission than to discover more possible outposts on the frontier of potentially life-bearing worlds," said Christopher Burke, Kepler scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., who is leading the analysis.

Since the last Kepler catalog was released in February 2012, the number of candidates discovered in the Kepler data has increased by 20 percent and now totals 2,740 potential planets orbiting 2,036 stars. The most dramatic increases are seen in the number of Earth-size and super Earth-size candidates discovered, which grew by 43 and 21 percent respectively.

The new data increase the number of stars discovered to have more than one planet candidate from 365 to 467. Today, 43 percent of Kepler's planet candidates are observed to have neighbor planets.

"The large number of multi-candidate systems being found by Kepler implies that a substantial fraction of exoplanets reside in flat multi-planet systems," said Jack Lissauer, planetary scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "This is consistent with what we know about our own planetary neighborhood."

The Kepler space telescope identifies planet candidates by repeatedly measuring the change in brightness of more than 150,000 stars in search of planets that pass in front of, or "transit," their host star. At least three transits are required to verify a signal as a potential planet.

Scientists analyzed more than 13,000 transit-like signals to eliminate known spacecraft instrumentation and astrophysical false positives, phenomena that masquerade as planetary candidates, to identify the potential new planets.

Candidates require additional follow-up observations and analyses to be confirmed as planets. At the beginning of 2012, 33 candidates in the Kepler data had been confirmed as planets. Today, there are 105.

"The analysis of increasingly longer time periods of Kepler data uncovers smaller planets in longer period orbits-- orbital periods similar to Earth's," said Steve Howell, Kepler mission project scientist at Ames. "It is no longer a question of will we find a true Earth analogue, but a question of when."

The complete list of Kepler planet candidates is available in an interactive table at the NASA Exoplanet Archive. The archive is funded by NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program to collect and make public data to support the search for and characterization of exoplanets and their host stars.

Ames manages Kepler's ground system development, mission operations and science data analysis. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., managed Kepler mission development. Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo., developed the Kepler flight system and supports mission operations with JPL at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore archives, hosts and distributes the Kepler science data. Kepler is NASA's 10th Discovery Mission and is funded by NASA's Science Mission Directorate at the agency's headquarters in Washington.

JPL manages NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program. The NASA Exoplanet Archive is hosted at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology.

Medgar Evers' widow to offer invocation for Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The widow of slain civil rights activist Medgar Evers will deliver the invocation at President Barack Obama's second inauguration on Jan. 21.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced Tuesday that Myrlie Evers-Williams would deliver the prayer. It comes 50 years after her husband was gunned down in the driveway of his Mississippi home. The inauguration falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Evers-Williams is a distinguished scholar at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Miss. She was chairwoman of the NAACP from 1995 to 1998.

Inaugural organizers said the Rev. Louie Giglio of Atlanta's Passion City Church will deliver the benediction for Obama's swearing-in.

In a statement, Obama says Evers-Williams and Giglio represent the ideals of justice, equality and opportunity that he pursues.

In 2009, the Rev. Rick Warren delivered the invocation.

AP Source: Shafer to take over at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) ? Syracuse will name defensive coordinator Scott Shafer as the Orange's next coach, a person familiar with the selection process told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Shafer succeeds Doug Marrone, who was named coach of the Buffalo Bills on Monday after four seasons at Syracuse. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because there has not been an official announcement from the university.

With national signing day looming, the school wanted to act quickly to find a replacement.

Dr. Daryl Gross, director of athletics, hinted in a radio interview Monday that the choice would come from within the staff.

Though the university had not made an announcement, Shafer's Wikipedia page already was updated on Monday night to say he was the coach, and his son and former players Rob Long and Antwon Bailey congratulated him on Twitter.

Shafer, a 1990 graduate of Baldwin Wallace University, was one of Marrone's first hires when he arrived in 2009 and has built the Orange defense into a top unit. Though he's never been a head coach, Shafer expressed interest in taking that next step and was a candidate for the Western Michigan job that went to P.J. Fleck last month.

CBS Sports first reported Shafer's hiring on Monday.

We hadn?t heard about a mom being shamed in public for breastfeeding all year. Granted, it has only been a week, but we were hopeful that 2013 might be a more tolerant time than 2012. Not so fast. A recent chain of events involving nursing moms and supporters proves that our country still needs to be educated that breastfeeding in public is normal, necessary and legal (in most places).

It started when Brittany Warfield, a mother of three from Texas, nursed her 7-month-old outside of a Hollister store in a Houston mall. Warfield told KHOU that a manager forced her to move. ?He said, ?You can?t do this here. This is not where you do that. You can?t do that on Hollister property. We don?t allow that.? I said, ?It?s Texas. I can breastfeed anywhere I like.? He said, ?Not at Hollister. Your stroller is blocking the way. You have to go,?? she recalls.

After hearing Warfield?s story, the ?lactivists? took action. A group planned a nurse-in at Hollister locations nationwide and announced the event on Facebook with the update: "Come on out, bring your baby and lets show our support for not only this mother but ALL mothers and their right to nurse their children when ever and where ever that may be." It was to be an event like the protests held last year at Target stores, the Facebook headquarters, on the national mall, and more.

Three women, Diana Hitchens, Autumne Murray and Jessica Hitchens, participated at their local mall in Delaware, one of 45 states which allows mothers to nurse in any location. They entered the store nursing their babies and holding posters. One read, ?Hey Hollister, my baby has a right to eat. It?s the law,? NBC 10 reports. The mothers claim they were reprimanded.

Murray told the news station that two security guards said they either "needed to leave or cover up." After an argument, the guards involved the Delaware State Trooper in the matter. ?He was asking if we were exposing ourselves saying that the security guards said we were exposing ourselves and that we could be kicked out of the mall if we didn?t cover up,? Murray told NBC 10. According to the news source, Delaware State Police are calling the incident a "civil matter."

But the story doesn't end there.

Following their experience at Concord Mall, the three women began to share their story within the online breastfeeding community. One mother, who was not involved in the incident, wrote on a Facebook page that she says belonged to the mall: "Shame on your mall for calling the police on women for feeding their babies! Shame!" The response? "Hope you guys don't mind if I suck my wife's breast in public," the mall allegedly wrote. That Facebook page has since been deleted, but Bethany Klebes who blogs at Jubilee Baby Co. took a screenshot of the exchange.

Representatives for the mall, however, deny that that Facebook page even belonged to them. In an email to the Huffington Post, mall management wrote (in part):

There were anonymous postings on a Facebook page shortly after this event occurred allegedly generated by the Concord Mall. These posts were crude and offensive and were not posted nor authorized by the Concord Mall. The Mall does not have an official Facebook page and communicates via its web-site [sic]. There is a Facebook icon on our homepage, however the account has never been officially in use by the Mall.

We are in the process of contacting Facebook to report these violations and hope to find the person or persons responsible for these posts. Again, neither the Concord Mall nor anyone authorized to speak on behalf of the Concord Mall made these posts to this unofficial Facebook page.

The response also indicated that the two officers involved have been removed pending further investigation.

A similar statement was sent to Michelle DeanRuben who posted the original comment on Facebook. Dionna Ford, of Best for Babes posted a screenshot of the email to her site, a breastfeeding advocacy destination. Ford (who has blogged for HuffPost) doesn't buy the mall's response and thinks both emails were a "poorly executed effort to cover any evidence of wrongdoing."

Despite the injustice that these three moms faced during the nurse-in, updates on the event's Facebook page suggest that the demonstration was successful. Dozens of mothers posted photos from Hollister locations around the country and left hopeful messages. Brittany Warfield, the mother who was originally reprimanded in Houston expressed her gratitude to all who took part.

?This incident is so much bigger than myself or just getting an apology from Hollister! It opens the door for the great people of this world to show and express that there are alternative ways of life and parents breastfeeding be it private or public is an awesome act of nurture and love and down right good eating for the young,? she wrote.

MOVIE REVIEW: 'The Guilt Trip' - Laguna Niguel - Patch

At first glance, this feature film seems awfully peculiar, simply in part to the duo who star in it. Funny man, Seth Rogen and Hollywood icon Barbra Streisand, seem to be a weird choice for a film about a mother and son who travel across the country. This being said, the two work surprisingly well together.

Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) is a scientist and an inventor with a great new cleaning product that he has made, that is Eco friendly and sure to turn the cleaning industry upside down for the better. He is the only child of his ever talkative and life of the party mother (Barbra Streisand) and together they journey across the country to try and sell his product to large household named companies.?

The duo's on screen dynamic is somewhat refreshing to see. The unexpectedness?of how well the two gel is actually what makes this film good. Joyce Brewster, Andy's mother is pushy, loud and doesn't seem to get sarcasm or condescension. Andy is straight to the point, monotone and very sarcastic. Together they go back and forth in some hilarious scenes that leave you stunned because of just how much you have laughed at the two.

The film follows the pair across many states, as Andy gets rejected from company to company. His charisma simply isn't there when pitching his idea. He is more scientist than salesman. With the help of his mother he learns to let go, and the two become closer. For Joyce, the trip is one of self discovery, closure and plenty of fun.?

The film caught me by surprise, as I sat in the theater, fully ready to come out and put pen to paper, filled with words like boring, predictable and overrated. Contrary to my previous notions, this film is a great family themed movie (with small instances of profanity) with a great moral behind it and some laughs along the way.

Streisand is as good as she has ever been, and Rogen plays his usual dry humored self to a "T". Worth a watch in my opinion.

I give it 3.5 patches out of 5 !

How do you feel about Web marketing? Improve the visibility of your business by researching the various methods you can use to promote it. Tools at your disposal on the subject of online marketing include publications, seminars, periodicals and videos. There is so much. Where do you start when it comes to making your own marketing plan? Give the insight in this article a chance to get you on the right road.

Do everything you can to stay abreast of the latest trends on the Internet and the social media outlets. The Internet is continuously changing, and it is changing quickly, so keeping up with all of the new innovations and popular websites can really help you to know what would be the best way to get your product more available to the public.

One good idea is to think about Internet marketing like a hobby instead of something to replace your job, at least initially. If you enjoy what you are doing, you will have extra motivation to succeed each day.

TIP! A great tip is to ensure your web page stands out. Web surfers have so many choices these days when it comes to websites, so you really need to put legitimate energy into developing a site that is unique and engaging.

The internet has made doing business an anonymous affair. This is an especially effective tool for small and independently owned businesses who rely on personal selling and relationship marketing to create customers for life.

Consider creating a web page for comments and customer reviews of your products and services. This kind of feedback from users is an effective way to show visitors the benefits and uses for your product. Be sure to monitor the page so the best reviews and comments are highlighted.

Consider creating a section on your website for frequently asked questions. It will help you answer any questions your customers might have more easily and efficiently which solves their problem and increases the level of satisfaction they feel. When the customer can see the benefits to your products in a clear and concise manner, there greater the chance they end up making a purchase.

TIP! Try to make your ads look unique, instead of traditional and common banner ads. People will be convinced to click on your banner ad when you make your banner ads more exciting.

Think about reviewing psychological studies reported on web design and marketing on the Internet. Some of the psychological factors that effect how you perceive things can impact what you read online and what you click on. Acting on this information can help you maximize your potential profits.

Online marketing is often most successful when your efforts fill another person?s needs. Look at the top questions of each day, and begin your day by composing some answers. Helping people solve their issues with your product or service is how word of mouth generates business.

Get involved with social networks, and reach out to users who fit your target market. Don?t send spam on social networking sites or you may be sued for harassment.

TIP! You can add sections to your website and have one big hub, where people can come and view products. Adding content while keeping an easy to navigate structure is key.

If you want to stand out as an authority to people who consider purchasing your product, try to actually interview authorities to post on your site. Be sure that you have permission from them before you publish so you don?t face legal trouble. You can also turn your interviews into articles that can be submitted to E-zine directories. This should drive added traffic to your site and hopefully some much needed sales and credibility to your site.

An excellent web-traffic generating tactic is to publish online press releases. If you have the ability to write press releases which are crisp and have clarity, there are numerous online sources available which will publish and release the material to markets in your niche. This is a very simple way to increase your profile.

TIP! People who generate small sales will find that the Internet is extremely competitive. There are a couple things you can do to try and stay ahead of the game.

Make your customers feel in control: organize your site efficiently so that your visitors can easily find what they are looking for. That is especially important because the Internet is full of unwanted opinions and spam. You should value your customers? opinion and encourage them to interact with you instead of being passive readers.

Acquiring fresh leads is the best way to get proactive about your sales. Real-time leads give you instant access to customers that are ready to buy. The delay between when the customer reached out and when you can contact them is shortened to its smallest possible window, leading to a great opportunity to close the sale.

Attach a personalized signature to your emails, with your name and a link to your site. This is the calling card for your business on the web, and you should distribute it at every opportunity. Letting those who receive your correspondence get a glimpse of your business is a great way to recruit new visitors to your website and generate even greater profits.

TIP! Customers most often respect, and appreciate honesty. By being honest, you will receive and retain the trust of your customers.

Now that you have an idea on where to start crafting your own Website marketing plan, are you ready to start experimenting? Do you have the tools necessary that you can apply to your own business? You can begin changing your plan to serve your purposes. If so, do it today!

Nebraska environment report favors revised Keystone XL pipe plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline received a boost on Friday when Nebraska regulators said its proposed new route would avoid many of the ecologically-sensitive areas that led the U.S. government to block it last year.

The new route for the $5.3 billion Alberta-to-Nebraska pipeline, backed by TransCanada Corp, would avoid the ecologically sensitive Sand Hills region but would still cross part of the massive Ogallala aquifer, the Nebraska environment regulator said.

If built, Keystone XL would link Canada's booming oil sands production with the refineries and ports of Texas' Gulf Coast, carrying some 830,000 barrels of oil per day. The project has been targeted by environmentalists concerned about carbon emissions from oil sands production and the risks posed by oil spills to water supplies in the Midwest.

The U.S. State Department is working with Nebraska as it forms its own environmental assessment of pipeline that is one piece of a continental realignment of oil flows between Canada and the United States.

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman now has 30 days to decide whether he supports the new Keystone XL route.

The State Department has said it will soon release its environmental assessment of Keystone XL, a necessary step before the Obama administration decides the fate of the project, which is expected to be in the coming months.

President Barack Obama last year rejected TransCanada's initial Keystone XL application after environmentalists raised concerns about the Nebraska route.

Obama threw his support behind the southern half of the line, which is already under construction and would drain a glut of U.S. crude in the middle of the country caused by a surge in output from new sources in places such as North Dakota. The section does not need federal approval as it does not cross the national border.

The Nebraska report did not address concerns about the project's impact on emissions linked to global warming. Many environmentalists worry about the pipeline's emissions because oil sands petroleum is more carbon-intensive than average crude refined in the United States.

"It doesn't analyze climate impacts, it really ignores a lot of the concerns we had, just a pretty dismal presentation all around," said Peter LaFontaine, energy policy advocate at the National Wildlife Federation. Environmentalists hope the State Department assessment will consider the emissions issue.

Environmentalists and other opponents have pledged to bring a range of legal action on the pipeline over its impact on everything from wildlife to landowners. Last month a Texas judge lifted a temporary restraining order over the southern half of the line that had halted construction.

The Nebraska report also downplayed risks to the Ogallala aquifer, a crucial irrigation source for agricultural areas in the central United States, saying any leaks "should be localized and Keystone would be responsible for any cleanup."

The report also said that the Canadian oil the pipeline would carry is physically and chemically "similar to those of other light crude oils commonly transported by pipeline."

Environmentalists claim diluted bitumen, or dilbit, from the oil sands is more corrosive than other crude oils, after a series of recent pipeline spills involving Canadian crude.

RIVAL PROJECTS

As the Keystone XL deliberations drag on, rival projects are taking shape that aim to cure a deep discount on Canadian heavy crude and move growing volumes of light oil from the North Dakota Bakken region.

Enbridge Inc, already the largest transporter of Canadian oil, moving more than 2 million barrels a day, added C$600 million ($609 million) worth of new plans on Friday to a massive C$6.2 billion expansion of its system through Western Canada, North Dakota, the U.S. Midwest and Eastern Canada, announced in early December.

The company said it would spend C$400 million on its Western Canadian system to add 230,000 barrels a day of capacity, mostly by increasing the horsepower of its pumping stations between Hardisty, Alberta, and the Canada-U.S. border.

Its U.S. affiliate, Enbridge Energy Partners, will spend $200 million to further that expansion between North Dakota and Superior, Wisconsin. The capacity is scheduled to be on line in 2015, the company said.

FOUR YEARS IN THE MAKING

TransCanada first applied to build Keystone XL more than four years ago, largely to open up a major new market on the U.S. Gulf Coast for Canadian producers. In that time, production has surged across North America, resulting in discounted prices versus international crudes.

Canadian heavy blends, priced against the U.S. light oil benchmark, have been doubly hit. One Canadian heavy crude, for instance, has sold at a discount of $40 to the main U.S. benchmark, West Texas Intermediate. That has added urgency to a push by the Alberta and Canadian governments to promote new pipeline capacity.

Executives with TransCanada have said Keystone XL remains an important project for Canada and the United States, despite rival developments and a recent forecast by the International Energy Agency predicting U.S. energy self-sufficiency in the next two decades.

TransCanada on Friday said it had not yet reviewed the latest report from Nebraska.

(AP) ? The BCS championship is going old school.

In this era of wide-open, pass-happy offenses, college football's ultimate prize will be decided Monday night by two throwback teams, No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 2 Alabama.

The Fighting Irish (12-0) have run for nearly has many yards as they've managed through the air. The Crimson Tide (12-1) is coming off a dominant performance on the ground in the Southeastern Conference championship.

"Alabama is that kind of team where you just know they're going to run the football," Notre Dame defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore said Thursday. "The whole world knows they're going to run the football. Just try to stop us ? that's their mentality. It's really kind of cool to see. There's not going to be any tricks or trick plays or anything like that."

The same could be said of the Irish, who are dominant on defense but a bit erratic when they drop back to throw.

While coach Brian Kelly might technically operate out of a modern spread offense, he's scaled back his desire to pile up the points and the passing yards like he did in his previous tenure at Cincinnati. Notre Dame has relied on a running back-by-committee approach and quarterback Everett Golson to wear down opponents, averaging more than 202 yards rushing per game.

Theo Riddick has gained 880 yards and five touchdowns, Cierre Wood has 740 yards and four TDs, while George Atkinson III has chipped in with 361 yards, five TDs and a team-leading 7.1 yards per carry. Golson is also a threat to tuck the ball and run, gaining 305 yards and scoring five times.

"Coach Kelly is known to sling the ball around, but this year we've kind of done both," Lewis-Moore said. "We've run the ball very well with Theo, Cierre and George. We're kind of like a three-headed monster."

If that's the case, then Alabama is a two-headed beast.

Junior Eddie Lacy and freshman T.J. Yeldon have both rushed for 1,000 yards and combined for a staggering 27 touchdowns, taking advantage of what is generally regarded as the best offensive line in the nation.

"It's like old-school football," Lacy said. "We line up in the I-formation and pound it. A lot of teams are in the spread and things like that. We like to keep it old school around here. The old-fashioned way still works."

Indeed, it does.

Just ask Georgia, which lost to Alabama in a thrilling SEC title game.

Facing a defense that might have two players selected in the first round of the NFL draft ? and includes several other pro prospects ? the Crimson Tide ran wild in its 32-28 victory. Alabama piled up a championship game record with 350 yards rushing, led by Lacy with 181 yards and two scores. Yeldon was nearly as good, tacking on 153 yards and a TD.

From Bob Diaco's perspective, it all starts up front. Notre Dame's defensive coordinator knows he must find a way to cope with the Tide's offensive line, which includes two first-team All-Americans (center Barrett Jones and left guard Chance Warmack) and a second-teamer (right tackle D.J. Fluker). Everyone across the front line weighs more than 300 pounds, and they all play with a bit of a nasty streak.

"They're the finest collection, tackle to tackle, that we've faced so far," Diaco said. "It's not another happy-go-lucky group of offensive linemen. This is an angry, aggressive, intense group of players that plays hard and finishes blocks."

They won't in any way be intimidated by Notre Dame's impressive defensive front, which has allowed only two rushing touchdowns all season.

"The backs are really the battery of that team, the battery of that offense," Diaco continued. "But they're facilitated by the offensive line. The offensive line is really the marquee position group of that pretty marquee offense."

No wonder the Crimson Tide feels no great urge to throw the ball. The team is way down in the NCAA stats when it comes to passing yards ? 84th at 214.5 per game ? but highly effective when it does go to the air. AJ McCarron is the nation's highest-rated passer, set a school record with 26 touchdown passes, and was intercepted only three times.

Alabama is the more likely team to break off a big play in the passing game, especially with another super freshman, Amari Cooper, averaging nearly 17 yards per catch and hauling in nine touchdown passes.

But it's all set up by the ground game. The Tide has run the ball an eye-popping 525 times, averaging 40 carries a game and far more than its 300 passing attempts. In only one game ? a last-minute victory at LSU ? has Alabama thrown the ball more than its run it.

Notre Dame is a bit more likely to go to the air, but not by much. The Irish rank 75th in passing yards with an average of 218.3.

"You have to adapt," Kelly said. "That's how we came up the formula this year to play the way we played."

In a triple-overtime victory over Pittsburgh, the Irish threw it 53 times. They would prefer a performance more in line with the regular-season finale against Southern Cal, in which Notre Dame displayed almost perfect balance (222 yards rushing, 217 yards passing).

Of course, it will be much tougher to run against Alabama's defense, which leads the nation with an average of just under 80 yards per game. But, regardless of what happens Monday, Kelly has done a masterful job of breaking in a new quarterback while winning every game.

"I didn't believe, nor did I want, to use this year as a bridge year, a transition year," the coach said. "We had to find a way to win those games. Manage those games. Limit possessions. Hold onto the football."

No doubt about it.

This BCS title game is going old school.

Get pot from vending machines, company suggests

Now that Colorado and Washington have legalized marijuana, entrepreneurs are embarking on what is being called "the green rush." NBC's Pete Williams reports.

By Jeff Black, NBC News

If a California company has its way, recreational marijuana users in Colorado and Washington state will one day be able to get their pot out of vending machines.

Such machines are already in use in some states where medical marijuana is legal, but now the maker?s founder says the company is working to adapt the machines to comply with new laws in Colorado and Washington, where adults can legally use marijuana for recreation.

The vending machines for medicine require a fingerprint scan to verify the identification of the patient, which is then linked to a prescription on file.

But as Washington and Colorado figure out how to create a legal pot market for the masses, Hollywood-based Medbox, a public company, is offering up its expertise in convenient delivery systems.

"One day we envision these machines to be accessed, when it's allowed, 24 hours a day,"?Vincent Mehdizadeh, the founder and chief consultant of a subsidiary of Medbox that produces, installs and consults on the vending business, told NBC News. "One day in the future that may happen, but for now these machines sit behind the counter as an inventory control and compliance tool."

He said the Medbox machines and consultancy are in high demand in states such as Arizona,?Massachusetts?and Connecticut that have published medical marijuana?regulations. Dispensaries use them to keep marijuana from being pilfered and comply with laws.

So where will all that 'legal' pot come from? Sale of pot stymied

Medbox is now offering to work with Washington and Colorado officials who are mobilizing to create the framework for a legal marijuana industry - and to collect taxes on pot sales.

"These machines behind the counter act an inventory control and taxation tracking tool so that the states can effectively track the taxes and collect on them more efficiently with real-time reporting directly from the machine to the state database," Mehdizadeh said.

The company also helps operators get licensed in states that have licensing programs.

"We've probably been the most?successful?consulting firm in the marijuana business," he said.

Mikhail Carpenter, spokesman for Washington?s Liquor Control Board, said Medbox has been in contact with the state but at this point no outside vendors have been chosen to help with marijuana sales.

Under state law, marijuana and marijuana-infused products, Carpenter said, would have to be sold from inside the confines of a retail outlet.

?So I can?t imagine with the way the law is written that you would see vending machines on the street corner,? Carpenter told NBC News.

In November, Washington and Colorado voters passed initiatives to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Those laws went into effect last month.

Buzzkill: Feds fire warning shot over pot legalization

In Washington state, voter-approved Initiative 502 made it legal for anyone 21 or over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, 16 ounces of ?solid marijuana-infused product? (pot brownies and such) or 72 ounces of ?marijuana-infused liquid.

Washington?s Liquor Control Board has until Dec. 1 to develop rules for implementation of its new recreational marijuana law.

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com?

Colorado, under Amendment 64 to the state Constitution, legalized not only recreational use, but also home growing, which is still illegal in Washington.

Growing, selling and possessing marijuana remains illegal under federal law, and the federal government is reviewing options in both Washington and Colorado.

President Barack Obama last month weighed in on the issue, telling ABC?s Barbara Walters the federal government has more important things to do than go after recreational marijuana users.

?We have bigger fish to fry,? he told Walters.

Two Colorado University students are facing multiple felony charges after campus police say they fed marijuana-laced brownies to their unsuspecting classmates and professor. KUSA's Nick McGurk reports.

The Importance of Computer Accessories

The computer is a very important aspect of our lives today. It seems almost unmanageable, a world without computers. There are tons of companies out there developing new accessories with the purpose of advancing the capabilities of the computer. Computer accessories are basically the components that you attach to the system in order to increase its functionality. Computers today are dependent on a number of accessories in order for the end user to be able to use them.

Accessories for the computer can be grouped into two categories, the first is the basic and the second is the advanced. The basic accessories are the speakers, printers, cases, covers, surge protectors and headsets. Whereas the more advanced stuff is the microphones, computer game devices, portable storage devices, network accessories and modem.

With these accessories you can carry out specific tasks such as if you had a picture and you wanted to transfer it to your computer, then you could purchase a scanner and then scan the image to your system. There are a variety of components, all of which are designed to help you carry out a specific task. Another example is the graphics card, if you were to go out and purchase a high end one, then it would greatly improve your gaming experience.

All of these different accessories, whether advanced or basic, are designed to make using the computer easier. Thus, it's important that you purchase only that which meets your requirement, rather than going out and wasting your money on something that you don't really need. As an example, if you had a system and all you did on it was write up documents and surf the internet, and you went out and purchased a high end graphics card for it, all of the money spent on that component would be wasted, as you'd never at any point utilise the full capabilities of that component. Instead, you may want to go out and purchase better software, something that has all the latest features, boosting your level of productivity in the process.

The UPS is a very important accessory, many of which feel is a must have. The purpose of this component is to protect your computer from sudden electrical surges and shortages. With the portable storage device, you can transfer data from your computer to this little device and carry it around with you. In order to properly equip yourself, you must first have some understanding of the various accessories that are available for your computer, and ask whoever you purchase the computer from to include some of these devices with the computer.
