Storm spins death, 'a lot of tears' in its path

Death blew in on the superstorm's wild winds and sea water torrents, claiming 90-year-olds and children with capriciously toppling trees, taking tall-ship adventurers in mountainous Atlantic waves and average folks just trying to deal with a freakish snowstorm. It felled both heroes rushing into harm's way and, ironically, people simply following advice to play it safe at home.

At least 72 died as the shape-shifting hurricane and winter storm ravaged the eastern U.S., and searchers continued looking for victims Wednesday.

In New York City, a college student went out to take pictures in the borough of Queens and was electrocuted by a downed power line, while across town on Staten Island, an off-duty policeman drowned after moving his family to safety.

Lauren Abraham, who went by the nickname LolaDiva on YouTube, was a makeup artist who worked out of a studio in her parents' Queens home. The recent beauty school graduate was studying at City University of New York's Lehman College, according to her Facebook page. "In her time of reflection she learned to find the beauty in even the darkest situations," her online bio reads.

As the superstorm ravaged New York and floodwater surged into his Staten Island house Monday evening, off-duty NYPD officer Artur Kasprzak, 28, shepherded six adult relatives and a baby to the attic.

Then, according to police, Kasprzak, a six-year veteran of the force, told one of the women he was going to check the basement. When he didn't return, she called 911. Police came quickly with a SCUBA unit, but couldn't access the home because power lines had fallen into the water.

"He went to the basement. And the water just started washing in," his sister Marta told the Daily News. "He was pushed into a window. ... The water just kept coming in."

Bunting draped a firehouse in Easton, Conn., honoring another first responder who rushed to help. Lt. Russell Neary was killed when an enormous tree crashed down on his fire truck as he and others tried to clear storm debris.

"We're a small volunteer department, and so everybody knew everybody," said Casey Meskers, the department vice president. Neary was the president. An insurance executive, he had volunteered for 13 years, and also helped with his children's sports teams.

"We've been on the soccer fields with each other with our kids," Meskers said Wednesday. "There's been a lot of tears shed, I'll tell you."

So many times, trees and heavy limbs that fell to the storm's powerful gusts left mourners along its path.

Two people died when a tree fell on their vehicle in Morris County, N.J., and many others perished inside homes, where they thought they'd be safe ? from North Salem, N.Y., where two boys, 11 and 13, were killed when a tree fell on their home, to Pasadena, Md.

Donald Cannata Sr., 73, was at home in Pasadena, a leafy suburb between Baltimore and Annapolis, when the storm knocked a large tree into his house. The retired civil engineer lived alone with his cat and dog and had stepped into the kitchen just when the tree fell.

He loved photography and opera and was considerate, hardworking and selfless, said his son, Donald Jr., an opinion shared by neighbors. Cannata's son said his father's death "shook me so to the core," partly because they had talked about taking down the tree.

"We talked about it so many times. I said, 'Pop, the tree's getting pretty old,'" Cannata said.

An elderly man trimming a tree in Pennsylvania's Lancaster County was killed when a limb broke and fell on him, authorities said.

A limb fall also killed John Rose Sr. as he and his wife checked fences on his snow-covered 100-acre farm near Philippi, W.Va., on Tuesday. The storm had dumped about seven inches of snow in the region, where Rose was a Republican candidate for the House of Delegates. He had traveled to Charleston regularly to lobby lawmakers on farming and other issues, and he hoped to continue making the trip as a member.

Rose, 60, had previously run a power-washing business and worked as a coal miner, his son George Rose said.

"The whole county knew him," he said.

The storm's blizzard threat was still far off when, churning in the relatively warm Atlantic off Cape Hatteras, N.C., on Monday, Hurricane Sandy engulfed the replica tall ship HMS Bounty. The ship, which was featured in the films "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," took on water and eventually went down.

Coast Guard rescuers saved most of the 17 crew members, but a search continues for the ship's captain, Robin Wallbridge.

Swept overboard with him was Claudene Christian, 42, who said she was a direct descendant of the man who led the infamous 1789 mutiny on the real HMS Bounty. In the 1962 Bounty film, Marlon Brando starred as lead mutineer Fletcher Christian.

Searchers found Christian ? a novice sailor who was wearing an orange survival suit ? unresponsive in the water late Monday, about eight nautical miles from where the Bounty sank. She was flown by helicopter to a hospital on the mainland, where she was pronounced dead.

A marketing specialist, she had lived in Alaska, Oklahoma and California. She was a member of the University of Southern California cheering squad, the Song Girls, from 1989 to 1991, said coach Lori Nelson. "Claudene will always be remembered for her energetic and bubbly personality on and off the field," the team posted on its Facebook page.

Endless accidents that would be described as freak twists of fate spun off from the superstorm.

Eugene "Rusty" Brooks, 42, of Woodstock, N.H., died Tuesday morning when a hillside construction site in the state's White Mountains collapsed beneath him. Brooks, owner of Pemmi Contracting, had been preparing a cellar on a home site on Loon Mountain in the ski resort town of Lincoln, said Police Chief Ted Smith. The cellar hole had filled up with rain from Sandy, and Brooks had just thrown a hose in to drain it off when the ground gave way.

"The retaining wall just liquefied with him standing there," Smith said. "He washed down with all the boulders, mud and water into the street."

When police and rescue workers arrived, they found a bystander performing CPR on Brooks, who could not be revived.

"It just basically was a freak, bizarre accident," the chief said. "It could have given way prior to him being there or afterwards."

The massive storm's unrelenting stress was blamed as a contributor to death by some loved ones, and in other cases the paralyzing wind and water compounded medical problems.

An Atlantic City, N.J., woman had a heart attack while she was being evacuated on Monday, officials reported.

In Pennsylvania's Lehigh County, an 86-year-old woman was pronounced dead of hypothermia after being found unresponsive in her yard following exposure to the storm, and a 48-year-old woman died of carbon monoxide poisoning in her home, the coroner's office reported.

A 90-year-old woman also died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator in the Philadelphia area, one of two claimed by the storm at age 90. The other was a Mansfield, Conn., woman who neighbors said left her home after a small tree snapped and was killed by a larger one.

In New York City, Herminia St. John, a 75-year-old grandmother of 14 who suffered from congestive heart failure and diabetes, died after her oxygen machine lost power and a backup failed. Her grandson, Claudio St. John, rushed into the street and tried unsuccessfully to flag down an ambulance. Finally, he went around the corner to Bellevue Hospital, where his mother worked as a food supervisor for 30 years. But by the time someone came it was too late.

"I hugged her and she hugged and kissed me," Elsa St. John, 54, told the Daily News. "She asked me to turn her to the window and she was gone."

Family of brain-damaged worker takes Foxconn to court in China

HONG KONG (Reuters) - The father of a Foxconn worker left brain-damaged by a factory accident in southern China took the company to court on Tuesday, in a case that heaps more attention on the labor practices of Apple Inc's largest contract manufacturer.

The case involves Zhang Tingzhen, a 26-year-old engineer who had nearly half his brain surgically removed after surviving an electric shock a year ago.

His plight came to light after Reuters reported that Taiwan firm Foxconn sent telephone text messages to his family telling them it would cut off funding for his treatment and other expenses if they did not remove him from hospital in Shenzhen city and submit him for a disability assessment 70 km (43 miles) away in Huizhou, where the company says he was hired.

But his father, Zhang Guangde, is contesting that and says his son was hired in Shenzhen, not Huizhou, where wages and compensation levels are substantially lower than in Shenzhen.

A lawyer representing Zhang's family told Reuters after a three-hour court hearing that they furnished evidence showing that Zhang was hired in Shenzhen.

"Our evidence includes hospital correspondences, notice of hospitalization, factory salary slips, colleague declarations, they all point to the time and place of his injury and his employment being in Shenzhen," said lawyer Zhang Xiaotan.

No comment was immediately available from Foxconn.

Labor activists say Zhang's case highlights a common practice among large companies in China, which sign work contracts with employees in inner Chinese cities, where wages and compensations levels are relatively low, and then deploy them to work in more expensive cities.

Doctors removed half Zhang's brain to keep him alive and he remains in hospital under close observation, unable to speak or walk properly.

His case has raised fresh questions over the labor practices of Foxconn, one of the biggest and most high-profile private employers in China, after a series of suicides among its workforce of about 1 million and recent labor unrest. (Editing by Robert Birsel)

The 5 Most Common #Outbound Calling Mistakes | #b2bsales

?A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.? ?John C. Maxwell

Sales reps aren?t immune to mistakes. Learn about the five most common mistakes sales reps make on outbound calls, and prepare yourself to avoid them.

  1. Not Having a Script ? A well-written script is the foundation of a winning sale. If you go into a call with no agenda, you?ll come out of it with no progress. A script allows you to guide the conversation with a prospect. You can find out exactly what you want to know in minimal time, and won?t get caught off track on discussing marginal details.
  2. Sounding Scripted ? A good script doesn?t come across as a sales rep reading from a sheet of paper. You can?t predict exactly what your prospect will say, so use your script as a guide rather than a bible. We use fewer inflexions in our voices when we read than we do when we speak, so an overly scripted sales call can quickly bore the other person on the line. Practice your script enough so that you know the flow of the conversation you?d like to have, but not so often that you memorize it verbatim.
  3. Failing to Convey Confidence ? If you don?t believe in your products or services, why would your prospects? Demonstrate your confidence in your offering and in yourself, and your prospects are more likely to trust you than they are to trust someone who appears shifty and skittish. A few minor changes in your behavior could make a big impact on your overall confidence: try to keep a positive attitude, tighten your posture, adopt high power body language, and make exercising a habit.
  4. Contacting the Wrong Person ? We loath when our mistakes end up wasting our time. If your sales contact is not the primary decision maker, find out who is, and how you can get in touch with them. Use sales intelligence to find key decision makers at target organizations, and save your sales pitch for the right person.
  5. Forgetting the Product ? We can?t predict which questions prospects will ask, but we still need to be prepared to answer them. If you tell a prospect something that is not true about your product during an initial conversation, it will come back to haunt you later in the deal. The outbound caller must know absolutely everything there is to know about the product or service they pitch.?

Hurricane Sandy may have put the kibosh on Google's gala in New York City, but it's not stopping the company from taking the wraps off of its latest pure Android phone. LG's Nexus 4 is finally official, after a cavalcade of leaks that spelled out just about everything ahead of time. As for the official specs? Social Media Branding and Photo Size Roundup | Business 2 ...

Maintaining consistent branding across your social media and web marketing presences is important to your overall brand strategy. Here?s the first in a series of articles on each social media platform and how to make the best use of the tools there to maintain a solid, consistent brand. Let?s begin with a roundup of photo sizes, rules and updates you?ll need to keep your accounts looking sharp and up-to-date.

Facebook Timeline Cover and Profile Photos

Facebook Profile Picture Size

For Facebook brand page profile pictures upload a square image of your brand?s logo or use another square image that represents your brand. The display size for the profile picture on a Facebook Timeline brand page is 160 x 160 pixels. Uploaded images must be at least 180 x 180 pixels and will be cropped to fit. On your Page?s cover photo the profile picture displays 23 pixels from the left side and 210 pixels from the top. Read Facebook?s full detailed post on cover photos here for more details.

Facebook Timeline Cover Photo Size

Facebook Timeline cover photos are 851 wide by 315 pixels tall. Images smaller than this will be stretched to fit, which could affect the quality. Use a high quality image in this space to welcome your fans, but make sure you follow the rules and regulations for Timeline cover photos. Cover photos can not contain references to discounts, contact information or calls to action such as ?get it now? or ?become a fan.?

To add a cover photo to your Facebook Timeline, hover over the cover photo area and click ?choose cover.? From there you can upload a photo from your computer or choose a photo from your Facebook photo albums. Either way, choose an image that represents your brand and your personality.

Facebook gives you the details on cover photo sizes here.

Here?s how both the cover photo and the Timeline photo are placed on the page:

Facebook Timeline photo placementFrom Facebook.com/help

Google + Profile Settings

Google Plus profile pictures should be 250 pixels x 250 pixels. Google will ask you to crop images larger than that to fit upon upload. Cover images should be 940 x 180 pixels or you can use the thumbnail images as an option, which are each 112 x 112 pixels. Unlike Facebook, Google (currently) doesn?t have the same restrictions for branding and CTAs in cover photos so brand away!

YouTube Brand Channel

Unless you have an official brand channel, your YouTube profile photo is the same as your Google profile. The current wisdom for a YouTube background image is 970 pixels wide; however, YouTube offers a lot more options through it?s official brand channels. Brand channels have a 970 pixels wide x 150-pixel-high banner which supports an image map so you can add links to your image. There is a 640-pixel-wide video player in the main content area and a 310-pixel-wide sidebar for displaying stats about your channel and links to your other social media accounts. On YouTube brand channels your image avatar should be 1600px by 1600px and should be a JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG. For a complete guide to setting up an official YouTube branded channel visit their how-to page here.

Twitter Profile Branding

Twitter background images should be no more than 90 pixels maximum on the left and must be in PNG, GIF, or JPG format, smaller than 800k. For your Twitter header image, use an image 1252?626 pixels (with a maximum file size of 5MB). Upload this image in the ?design? section of your profile.

LinkedIn Branding

If you?ve made a company page for your business on LinkedIn, there are more options for branding available. Minimum size for the header image is 646 x 220 pixels but LinkedIn will allow you to crop a larger image once you?ve uploaded it. Logo images should be 100 x 60 pixels. If you?re adding banner images under the products and services pages, those images should be 640 x 220. LinkedIn allows company pages up to three banner images. Use this space to highlight your most important products.

I?ll continue this series with in-depth instructions for each platform, but for now let this serve as a cheat sheet of sorts. Do you have any suggestions for branding your pages? Leave them here in the comments or on my Facebook page.

New England shapes up as Dem firewall for Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats are counting on their New England friends to help them pick up Republican-held Senate seats on Nov. 6 and construct a barrier against losses in Nebraska and elsewhere that could erase their majority.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has stopped spending money in Maine, where former Gov. Angus King, an independent, leads in the polls and is seen as likely to side with Democrats if he wins. In Massachusetts, Republican Sen. Scott Brown is suddenly considered the underdog against Elizabeth Warren as the state is poised to easily back President Barack Obama over former Gov. Mitt Romney.

"She's closing the argument by linking Brown with national Republicans, who are about as popular around here as the New York Yankees," said Mike Shea, a Democratic strategist in Boston.

Republican hopes of swiping the seat in Connecticut are fading. Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy has steadied his campaign against former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, who spent $50 million on an unsuccessful bid in 2010 and $42.6 million and counting this year. McMahon's less-than-stellar debate performances and the state's Democratic tilt have undercut the GOP candidate's prospects.

"If New England could tip the Senate's balance to the Republicans, it would be fairly earth-shattering," said Rob Gray, a veteran GOP consultant in Massachusetts. "The real question is whether these races will be close-but-no-cigar for Republicans."

In Senate math, the loss of two seats in New England complicates the GOP calculation for majority control. Republicans would have to gain a net of six seats while holding suddenly uncertain Indiana, or a net of five seats if Romney wins the presidency. Democrats currently have the edge 53-47, including two independents who caucus with the party.

On the Election Day ballot are 23 Democratic seats and 10 Republican.

Republicans are optimistic they can make it add up and they point to fresh enthusiasm for Romney and the party ticket. After weeks of pure toss-ups, Republicans say North Dakota and Wisconsin are trending GOP though still close, Montana remains tight and the contest in Ohio has narrowed, due in large part to the roughly $20 million in negative ads against Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.

In a late move, the GOP invested $500,000 in Pennsylvania, where some polls show a tight race between first-term Sen. Bob Casey and tea-party backed businessman Tom Smith, who has invested more than $16 million into his bid. The state has been considered safe Democratic for much of the year.

Republicans and Democrats expect Nebraska to switch to the GOP despite the candidacy of former Sen. Bob Kerrey, and Virginia to stay close, with the outcome of the presidential election crucial to the final count.

That's not so in Florida. Romney has grabbed a slight lead in polling, but there are no signs that it has helped Republican Rep. Connie Mack in his race to unseat two-term Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. In the most telling development, outside Republican groups bailed on the Senate race at the beginning of October and there is no indication they will resume spending in the closing days.

Guy Cecil, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said he was cautiously optimistic about Democrats holding their majority.

"Frankly a lot in our own party gave us little chance to be competitive this cycle, in large part because they were looking at a map where we had two times as many Democratic seats and we were coming off the worse election cycle for Democrats in 75 years," Cecil said. "Certainly despite that fact and the fact that we had seven retirements, we are in a stronger position today than at any point in the cycle."

Privately, Republicans are nervous about Indiana, unsure about the political damage from Republican state treasurer Richard Mourdock's debate comment that pregnancy resulting from rape is "something God intended."

Democrats are spending $1.1 million on an ad saying even Romney and Rep. Mike Pence, who is running for governor, "believe Mourdock goes too far." Worried about Mourdock, the anti-tax Club for Growth, a strong proponent of the Republican in his primary win over six-term Sen. Richard Lugar, invested more money on Friday, raising its state spending to more than $3.5 million.

Up until the debate, Mourdock's race with Rep. Joe Donnelly had been close; the comment could prove decisive in the campaign's closing days.

Republicans dismiss Democratic hopes of capturing the Arizona Senate seat, arguing that Rep. Jeff Flake has consistently maintained a lead in the polls over Richard Carmona. Democrats cringed recently when Carmona told the male moderator at a debate with Flake that he was prettier than CNN's Candy Crowley, who moderated the second presidential debate. Carmona later apologized to Crowley.

Determined to change the trajectory of the race, Democrats released an ad of the state's two Republican senators delivering effusive testimonials about Carmona at his 2002 Senate confirmation hearing for U.S. surgeon general in President George W. Bush's administration.

"One might call him a man for all seasons," says Sen. Jon Kyl.

"He's extraordinarily, perhaps uniquely qualified, to address the need of our nation," says Sen. John McCain.

Republicans have countered with ads in Arizona, Indiana, Montana and North Dakota, linking the Democratic candidates to Obama and in some cases, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, with images of the president and California Democrat.

"Once Heidi was different, but now she's fighting for Obama not us," says a commercial about North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp, who is in a close race with Rep. Rick Berg.

The GOP spot against Carmona calls him Obama's rubber stamp. The one against Donnelly says a vote for him is a vote for the Obama-Pelosi agenda. "Say no to this yes man," the ad says.

In Missouri, the once vulnerable Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill is trying to hold onto her seat against Rep. Todd Akin, who severely damaged his candidacy when he said women's bodies can avoid pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." National Republicans, including Romney, abandoned Akin, but conservatives and evangelicals still stand behind his candidacy.

Top 10 Considerations When Integrating Social Media

Social media icons on a screen

In a world where the instant access to information has changed the way people in modern society communicate and collaborate, social media tools and social networking for many have become a paradigm that permeates their personal and professional lives. As a result, social media tools are partially responsible for introducing to the marketplace a new workforce and customer base that is challenging conventional methods of conducting business. In response to these changes, many organisations are re-evaluating the manner in which they share information among their workforce and respond to the demands of their customers.

At the heart of this new reality lies the project management world that heavily relies on the ability to effectively share and communicate project statuses to avoid bottlenecks and ensure success. Employing the best methods and technology is key to any successful project management environment. Although it is true that social media is one of the most popular new forms to communicate, project management organisations need to be cognizant of both the dangers and benefits that go along with this new technology. Before jumping on the ?Social Media? bandwagon you need to gauge your readiness for successful adoption and make a well-informed decision that is aligned with your business goals and culture.

To help you evaluate your own project management organisation?s alignment with social media tools you should ask yourself the following questions:

1. Are you ready to develop a social media strategy?

Unlike other collaboration tools, social media tools require a strategic plan that will ensure that you can maximise its benefits of increasing productivity and avoid its danger of sharing the wrong information with the wrong project stakeholders. For this very reason alone, developing a social media plan can mean the difference between improving customer engagement and hurting existing customer relationships.

2. What types of projects are you managing?

Depending on the nature of your typical projects social media tools can create pollution that will hurt progress. For example, highly sensitive projects that requires the selective sharing of information among stakeholders should employ a more closed network and controlled flow of information that is in direct contradiction to the more transparent and fluid information exchange resulting from social media technology.

3. Is your industry and people in line with the benefits of social media?

Certain industries can greatly benefit from social media technology while others will discover that its misaligned with their business. For example, new product development and marketing groups can leverage the benefits of better visibility and knowledge sharing, while the legal industry may discover that the unstructured natured of information capture by social media can hurt their processes.

4. Would you classify your organisation as early adopters of technology?

Organisations need to gauge their readiness for progressive technology offered up by social media. If the business is resistant to adopt new technology the chances for success will be slim.

5. Do you currently use any social media tools for projects?

The informal use of social media tools is typically a good indicator that your organisation will successfully embrace a Social PPM strategy that is in line with your current collaboration tools.

6. Do you encourage transparency with project information?

Social media tools inherently encourage the transparency in sharing information. When implementing a Social PPM strategy an organisation needs to be selective in integrating the best social media tools that will reveal the right information to the right stakeholders.

7. Do you work with dispersed and remote project teams? Are mobile devices integral to your project workforce?

Organisations with decentralised project teams that regularly collaborate and work from multiple locations can quickly benefit from the ?on the go? nature delivered by social media tools designed to be access via multiple mobile platforms.

8. How effective is your current collaboration platform?

As the expression goes, ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.? It is important to evaluate how well your current collaboration and communication platform is functioning. If you are seeking room for improvement, by all means investigate what social media can offer your organisation. However, the introduction of new tools may introduce new problems. It is critical to assess the risk versus reward of social media and how it will ultimately impact your business as a whole.

9. Is collaborative document sharing mature in your organisation?

Prior to adopting the latest collaboration tools offered up by social media, it is critical to assess your current collaboration platform. In a project-centric environment social media tools are more effective when they are able to enhance an already existent collaboration environment that delivers robust web and document management capabilities to its current workforce.

10. Is your project organisation resistant to change?

With the introduction of any new process or technology the change management question cannot be ignored. Including a change management component as part of the Social PPM strategy can mean the difference between the smooth adoption and a painful rejection of the new tool sets.

Zombies Invented In Buffalo?

By Greg Hinaman:

Mark Twain was living in Buffalo for awhile. One of the stories he wrote in?1872 while he was here was called "A Curious Dream"--a story about?corpses rising?from the dead and walking. Is Buffalo the birthplace of Zombies used in?entertainment form?

The earliest zombie walk on record was held on August 19, 2001, in?Sacramento, California. The event, billed as "The Zombie Parade," and the?idea spread to other cities, and in October 2003 the second zombie gathering?on record, billed as a "Zombie Walk," was held in Toronto, Ontario

In 2009 Terror Technologies started looking into the Zombie craze--right?after our Free Haunted House for Charity wrapped up for the season. We were?looking for a way to promote our Charity Haunt year-round when we got?together with Mark Madden of Maddtat2 & Madd Tiki Tattoo in April of 2010?and held the first official Buffalo Zombie Walk for Charity & Pub Crawl?just 2 months later on July 10, 2010.

The Food Bank of WNY contacted me about being part of the event and not?only did they join us they also put us in their Food Drive Music Video,?which is shown prior to every movie in Dipson Theaters across WNY. We have?had a great working relationship with the Food Bank of WNY ever since and?have collected tons of food for them. Now we also work with Make-A-Wish,?Hearts for the Homeless, and UNYTS on a regular basis.

The Buffalo Zombie Walk & Pub Crawl for Charity was the very first combo of?a Walk & Pub Crawl to be held the same day back-to-back in the world. We?also formed what is now called the Terror Tech Zombie Blood Crew because of?this event. People of all walks of life join us in our mission to make a?difference in WNY--one event at a time. Soon after, we were being invited to all?kinds of events, parades, fairs, and festivals--to the point where we?can be seen?almost every weekend somewhere in WNY dressed up as Zombies.

I had no idea that we would be what we are today. I can honestly say we?have taken WNY by HORDE, wherever we go now we are recognized and?thanked for relentless hard work in raising awareness and helping the?community--from charity foundations to the complete strangers we helped?throw benefits for to cover medical expenses to doing thousands of free?zombie make-up for whoever wants it at events. We just want to make people?smile and forget about the daily grind some of us are caught up in. Who knew?dead people would be the hit of the party!

Today we stand up proud (well as much as a Zombie can) knowing we have?made Zombies & Charity work go hand-in-hand not only in WNY but across the?world. I have people worldwide who ask for guidance on throwing a Zombie?Walk in their hometown, and almost everybody is tossing in a charity to?benefit from it.

You too can be a hometown hero, it doesn't take brains. If a Zombie can?figure it out, then you can too. At Terror Technologies, We Play Dead So?Others May Live.

Being a fashion ZOMBIE requires not being afraid of getting bloody,?dirty, and ruining your clothes! The fun part is learning how to?apply special-effects makeup and to be sexy and scary at the same time.?The zombie trend isn't just for Halloween, it seems here in Buffalo that?it's a year-round job. Start zombifying and stocking up on fake?blood, create your own unique wardrobe, and learn to be scary.

Clarks Pond a Classroom at Bloomfield Middle School - Bloomfield ...

Bloomfield Middle School is thinking outside of the box ? and classroom ? when it comes to environmental studies.

Since the beginning of the school year, Clarks Pond, located behind the Huck Road school, has been the centerpiece for science lessons, thanks to Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission's living classroom program.

"We're taking what students learn in class and applying it to a direct science lesson," said 7th and 8th grade West Wing teacher Wendy Cerniglia.

On Thursday, Cerniglia's class roamed the grassy, picturesque bank of Clarks Pond and played an "I Spy" game, where students had to describe an animal, plant or something from the water for others to guess.

"We're just helping out the environment," said 8th grader Armani Johnson, who was part of a group of students that recently planted trees along the living classroom. Johnson has also brainstormed ideas to build a habitat for the Canadian geese that congregate behind the school.

Clarks Pond, and the connecting Third River, are tributaries to the Passaic River, treated by the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission.

Since 2002, 200,000 students have learned through hands-on lessons how to become environmental stewards through the commission's Educational Outreach Program. The living classroom program currently exists in two Fairlawn schools and Bloomfield.

The school hopes Clarks Pond can be used for lessons in other subjects, like physical education, art and music. The clearing features several log benches and a teaching station for instruction. And, this winter, students will build bird houses to install outside in March.

"...This belongs to you," said Principal Sal Goncalves of the living classroom. "We need to protect it."

Calif. man charged in deaths of 3 family members

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A 19-year-old Northern California man accused of fatally stabbing his sister-in-law and young niece and nephew was formally charged with three counts of murder Friday at his first court appearance.

Authorities have yet to release a motive, but Grigoriy Bukhantsov's attorney said after the hearing that his client appears to have psychological problems and a history of drug and alcohol abuse.

Bukhantsov faces the possibility of the death penalty, but Sacramento County Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Stephen Grippi said it could be several months before prosecutors decide whether they'll pursue it.

"That decision will be made after a much more complete evaluation," Grippi said. "We have to do a full investigation of his background."

Bukhantsov was arrested early Wednesday, hours after his older brother returned to his suburban Rancho Cordova home to find his 23-year-old wife, Alina Bukhantsov, dead along with their 3-year-old daughter, Emmanuela, and 2-year-old son, Avenir. The couple's 6-month-old baby, Mark, was found unharmed in a crib.

Alina and her son both died of stab wounds to the neck and torso, the Sacramento County coroner's office said Friday. Emmanuela died of stab wounds to the chest.

Sacramento County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jason Ramos said investigators recovered several knives.

"We recovered at least one knife from the scene, as well as several other things that could possibly be murder weapons, but they have to do the testing on them to make sure," Ramos said Friday.

Supervising Assistant Public Defender John Perkins said he visited Grigoriy Bukhantsov in jail before Friday's brief court hearing.

"It's obviously a tragedy for the family, everybody involved in the case," Perkins told reporters outside the courtroom after the hearing. "He's distraught, very confused."

Perkins said it was appropriate that his client was being held in a psychiatric unit at the county jail, where he was being watched closely to make sure he doesn't harm himself.

"Obviously we're going to vigorously defend all aspects of the case," Perkins said. Later, he added, "It appears that we have maybe a psychological history, and some mental health issue," along with reports from the family that Bukhantsov had a history of using drugs and alcohol.

Bukhantsov also has a prior conviction for a 2011 residential burglary in which he pleaded no contest to stealing a woman's iPod from her bathroom.

The suspect, dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit, did not enter a plea during his initial court appearance. He kept his eyes cast on the floor, looking up only briefly to acknowledge his name inside a heavily guarded courtroom in the county jail. Four bailiffs stood with him inside a cage.

Bukhantsov's next hearing was scheduled for Nov. 26.

Sheriff's homicide Sgt. Jim Barnes said Bukhantsov has refused to discuss the deaths and investigators have not determined a motive.

Deputies say the suspect had a troubled relationship with his family, and court records show his parents and siblings sought restraining orders because they were afraid of him. He repeatedly threatened to stab, shoot and burn them to death, struck his relatives, punched holes in walls and showed signs of using drugs and alcohol, family members said in the court filings.

Alina Bukhantsov's husband, Denis Bukhantsov, said his brother was calm when he showed up at the family's home Monday night seeking shelter from a rainstorm.

Barnes said the suspect showed no signs of intoxication when he was arrested, but drug test results are pending.

(AP) ? With the launch of Windows 8, people are about to discover a computing experience unlike anything they've seen before. Here's a guide to getting past some of the hurdles.

The main thing to know is that Windows 8 is designed especially for touch-screen computers, to make desktops and laptops work more like tablets. It is Microsoft's way of addressing the popularity of tablets, namely the iPad. But Windows 8 will work with mouse and keyboard shortcuts, too. It'll take some getting used to, though.

There are two versions of Windows 8, or more precisely, there's Windows 8 and there's Windows RT. They look the same, but they run on different processing chips. Windows 8 runs on standard chips from Intel and AMD and is the version you'd get if you're upgrading your home desktop or notebook PC. Windows RT is the version for light, small tablets and laptop-tablet hybrids.

Windows 8 will run programs written for older versions of Windows. Windows RT won't. It's limited to applications specifically written for it and available through Microsoft's store. (As a consolation, a version of Microsoft Office is included free on Windows RT devices).

Here are some tips on how to navigate the new Windows:

? When you start a Windows 8 machine, you're greeted with a screen that shows the time and a pretty picture. To get past it with a touch-screen device, swipe upwards with your finger from the bottom edge of the screen. If you have a keyboard, hit any key.

? Next, you'll see a mosaic of Live Tiles, each representing an application. Programs specifically written for Windows 8 will run in this new environment, which is unofficially nicknamed Metro. Each application fills the screen when you run it. Applications written for older Windows versions will open up in something that looks very much like the old Windows Desktop environment. You can switch back and forth between Metro and the new Desktop, though Microsoft wants people to eventually use only Metro.

? The Desktop screen lacks a Start button, so it's hard to start programs from there. Microsoft's idea is that users should learn to go to the Metro tiles to start programs or access settings, even if many programs, including some Windows utilities, will open up in Desktop. To get back to the tiled Start screen with a mouse or touchpad, move the mouse cursor to the top right corner of the screen, then swipe it down to the "Start" icon that appears. If you have a touch screen, reveal the Start icon by swiping in from the right edge of the screen.

? In the Desktop environment, you can glance at the Taskbar to see which Desktop programs are running. If you're a mouse or touchpad user in Metro and want to see what's running, you have to know this trick: Move the cursor into the top left corner of the screen, then drag it down along the left edge of the screen. If you have a touch screen, swipe in from the left edge, then quickly swipe back in.

? Neither environment will show you programs that are running in the other environment, but if you have a touch screen, swiping in from the left side of the screen lets you jump between open applications. The "Alt-Tab" combination does the same thing with a keyboard, in case you aren't using a touch screen.

? There are two versions of Internet Explorer, one for each environment. A Web page you open in one doesn't appear in the other, so if you're trying to find your way back to a page, it helps to remember which browser you were using.

? When using Metro on a touch screen, you close a program by first swiping your finger down from the top edge of the screen. That shrinks the window. Then you swipe your finger down to the bottom edge of the screen. Don't stray to the right or left edges of the screen, or the app will end up "docked" in a column along that edge. You can perform the same action with a mouse cursor by clicking and dragging from the top edge of the screen, but using the old "Alt-F4" command is easier.

? In the Desktop version of Internet Explorer, you can see at a glance which pages you have open in "tabs." In Metro, each Web page fills the screen, leaving no room for tabs.

To see which other pages are open on a touch-screen computer, you swipe your finger down from the top of the screen to reveal thumbnails of the other windows. Don't sweep too far, or you'll shrink the window instead.

If you're using a mouse in Metro, you right-click anywhere on the screen to reveal the tabs. Of course, this means right-clicking no longer does any of things it can be used for in previous versions of Windows, such as letting you open a link in a new tab.

? When Microsoft introduced Windows 95, some people thought it was amusing and counterintuitive that the procedure for shutting down the computer began with the "Start" button. In Windows 8, that incongruity is gone along with the Start button, but shutting down with a mouse or touchpad isn't obvious either. Move the cursor into the top right corner of the screen. A menu will pop out. Sweep down to the "Settings" button that appears, and click it. Then click "Power," then "Shut down." If you're on a touch screen, start by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, then tap "Settings."
