Israel targets al-Qaida militant in Gaza

GAZA, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- The Israeli air force has killed several Palestinian militants linked to al-Qaida in the Gaza Strip in a string of recent airstrikes, the first time the Israelis have systematically targeted jihadist operatives there.

The raids underline how al-Qaida, which is also attacking the Jewish state from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, is now deemed a threat to Israel amid the political upheavals across the Arab world throughout 2011 that have propelled radical Islamist parties into power.

This is seen as a potentially major boost for the jihadists and could have enormous political impact in the volatile region by ending the power of Arab dictators friendly with the United States.

"What's happening in Sinai is that global terrorist organizations are meddling there and their presence is increasing because of the connection between Sinai and Gaza," Israel Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu warned recently.

Alarm was heightened by Western intelligence reports senior al-Qaida veterans are moving from Pakistan and Afghanistan to North Africa, possibly to exploit the political turmoil there.

The mastermind behind this is Ayman al-Zawahiri, a veteran Egyptian jihadist who took over al-Qaida after Osama bin Laden was assassinated in Pakistan May 2.

Al-Qaida has had affiliates operating in Gaza for some time but these have come to prominence since the fundamentalist Hamas movement seized control of the strip in 2007 from the mainstream Fatah organization.

Hamas has sought to crush the jihadists who challenged its authority but there are at least four jihadist groups operating in the coastal territory. These have taken to mounting rocket and infiltration attacks on Israel, seeking to provoke Israeli retaliation and block reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah that could bolster the moribund peace process.

In the airstrikes that began Dec. 27 following rocket attacks from Gaza, the Israelis killed several al-Qaida operatives, who the military calls "global jihad-affiliated terrorists."

Two of those slain, identified as Ramo Daoud Jabar Khafarna and Hazam Saadi al-Shakr, were former members of Hamas who defected to the Salafists. Another was Muaman Abu Daf, reputedly a leader of Jaish al-Islam, or Army of Islam, one of the main jihadist groups.

The Israelis claim the fourth fatality, Abdallah Telbani, had taken part in rocket and bombing operations against Israel in Gaza and the Sinai.

There are four key Salafist groups in Gaza that have proclaimed loyalty to al-Qaida.

These are Jaish al-Islam; Jund Ansar Allah, or Warriors of God; Jaish al-Ummah, or Army of the Nation; and Jaish al-Muminun, or Army of Believers, also known as al-Qaida in Palestine.

At the same time, there have been persistent reports al-Qaida operatives are infiltrating Lebanon, on Israel's northern border, to foment unrest there as the regime in neighboring Syria battles a stubborn pro-democracy uprising there aimed at toppling President Bashar Assad.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has denied that but pro-Syrian Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn says the jihadists are infiltrating Lebanon posing as Syrian opposition activists aiming to destabilize the country.

Syria's opponents in Lebanon claim the beleaguered Damascus regime seeks to whip up sectarian violence in Lebanon to block support there for the anti-Assad uprising in which by U.N. count 5,000 people have been killed since March 15.

Al-Qaida has had a presence in Lebanon, which is still technically at war with Israel, for several years.

In 2007, the army fought a 300-strong jihadist group known as Fatah al-Islam, which included scores of Saudi Arabians, in a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon for five months before crushing them.

Hundreds of people were killed but Fatah al-Islam was never completely eradicated.

Al-Qaida has operatives in the volatile Ain al-Hilweh camp outside the southern port city of Sidon and is widely perceived to be spreading.

But for now, Gaza seems to be the main flash point for the Israelis, although it's more likely the vast Sinai Peninsula, mostly desert and mountains, will become a greater threat as al-Qaida builds its strength there while Cairo's control dwindles.

An Aug. 18 attack in which eight Israelis and five Egyptian troops were killed in the southern Sinai and the repeated bombing of the Egypt-Israel natural gas pipeline underline the danger.

The Egypt-based jihadists announced the formation of their Sinai wing, Ansar al-Jihad in the Sinai Peninsula, in December. Israel is bracing for trouble.

An ambitious plan for curing cancer in a businesslike way is in the works

From The Economist:

ScreenHunter_05 Jan. 02 00.00Dr DePinho is the new president of the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston, Texas. (He took over in September, having previously headed the Belfer Institute, part of Harvard?s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.) Mindful of his adopted city?s most famous scientific role, as home to Mission Control for the Apollo project, he says his own mission is akin to a moon shot. He aims to cure not one but five varieties of cancer. What he has not yet decided is: which five?

That it is possible to talk of curing even one sort of cancer is largely thanks to an outfit called the International Cancer Genome Consortium. Researchers belonging to this group, which involves 39 projects in four continents, are using high-throughput DNA-sequencing to examine 50 sorts of tumour. They are comparing the mutations in many examples of each type, to find which are common to a type (and thus, presumably, causative) and which are mere accidents. (The DNA-repair apparatus in malignant cells often goes wrong, so such accidents are common.)

The consortium?s work is progressing fast, and preliminary results for many tumours are already in. But such knowledge is useless unless it can be translated into treatment. That is where Dr DePinho comes in?for his career has taken him into the boardroom as well as the clinic.

More here.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann plan to make their next ? and possibly last ? stands in South Carolina instead of chasing the rest of the GOP presidential pack to New Hampshire.

Neither candidate is a sure bet to survive past Tuesday's leadoff Iowa caucuses. But both say they'll jump ahead to the first Southern state to vote, a recognition that they have little hope of making up ground in the nine days before New Hampshire's primary. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is heavily favored in his neighboring state, but a few others are in pursuit.

Perry, the Texas governor, heads straight to Greenville, S.C. on Wednesday. Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, will spend part of three days in that state beginning Wednesday, her campaign manager said.

The two campaigns could face pressure to fold if they don't pull off surprising third-place-or-better finishes in Iowa. In Bachmann's case, the latest polling has her in last place among the six candidates campaigning hard.

For the last week, Bachmann has pushed back on daily questions about her ability to move on if she can't climb out of the basement in Iowa, the state where she was born.

"Well, we've bought tickets to head off to South Carolina," she said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." She has a South Carolina staff of at least a dozen and backing from influential tea party activists there.

Asked this weekend if he could conceive of a scenario where she drops out ahead of South Carolina, Bachmann campaign manager Keith Nahigian told The Associated Press, "Not at this point."

Nahigian said Bachmann doesn't intend to arrive in New Hampshire until Friday ahead of back-to-back weekend debates there. Perry also plans to participate in those debates.

Bachmann has invested little time in New Hampshire in the six months she's been in the race. In October, five full-time staff members for her there quit.

Perry is also a footnote in most New Hampshire polls and hasn't devoted much effort to the state lately.

Romney is far ahead of his rivals in New Hampshire. But former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman practically moved into a state where independents can vote, bypassing an Iowa contest where social conservatives tend to hold sway. Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich also plan to aggressively compete in New Hampshire.

"I think New Hampshire is a good place to start the debate for South Carolina," Gingrich said Sunday.

Iran successfully tests domestically made nuclear fuel rods: TV (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran has successfully produced and tested fuel rods for use in its nuclear power plants, state television reported on Sunday, in a snub to international demands that it halt sensitive nuclear work.

The rods, which contain natural uranium, were made in Iran and have been inserted into the core of Tehran's research nuclear reactor, the television reported.

Nuclear fuel rods contain small pellets of fuel, usually low-enriched uranium, patterned to give out heat produced by nuclear reaction without melting down.

"This great achievement will perplex the West, because the Western countries had counted on a possible failure of Iran to produce nuclear fuel plates," the Tehran Times newspaper said.

The development was announced at a time of growing tension between Western powers and Iran after the U.N. nuclear agency reported in November that Tehran appeared to have worked on designing a nuclear weapon. Secret research to that end may be continuing, it said.

The United States and its European allies have increased the sanctions pressure on Iran, one of the world's largest oil producers, to push Tehran to halt the enrichment.

U.S. President Barack Obama signed more sanctions against Iran into law on Saturday, shortly after Iran signaled it was ready for new talks with the West on its nuclear program and said it had delayed long-range missile tests in the Gulf.

GAIN LEVERAGE

Western analysts say Iran sometimes exaggerates its nuclear advances to gain leverage in its stand-off with the West.

In April, Iran's Atomic Energy Organization announced that the installation of the machinery needed for producing nuclear fuel plates had started. The nuclear plant for converting enriched nuclear fuel into fuel rods was inaugurated in 2009.

"Currently, the rod is also undergoing rays at Tehran's Research Reactor to examine its long-term performance, Iran's English language Press TV reported.

Iran says only a few countries are capable of making both the fuel "plates," used in the Tehran reactor, and nuclear fuel rods, which are used in power stations.

Enriched uranium can be used to fuel power plants and other types of reactors, which is Iran's stated aim, or to provide material for atomic bombs if processed much further, which the West suspects is the country's ultimate intention.

Tehran says it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity.

Iran's decision last year to raise the level of some enrichment from the 3.5 percent purity needed for civilian power plant fuel to 20 percent worried Western states that feel this will bring Tehran much closer to the 90 percent suitable for an atomic bomb.

Tehran has so far refused to change its nuclear course but is ready to hold new talks to resolve the dispute. Negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France - plus Germany (P5+1) stalled in January.

Wilcox's 24 leads Washington past Oregon 76-60

SEATTLE (AP) ? Whether starting or coming off the bench, there's no doubting the shooting prowess of Washington's C.J. Wilcox.

Moved to a reserve role for the start of Pac-12 Conference play, Wilcox responded by matching his career-high with 24 points, and the Huskies improved to 2-0 to start the conference season with a 76-60 win over Oregon on Saturday night.

"I just know I have to come off and create a sort of spark for the team coming off the bench," Wilcox said. "I'm OK with it. It's good."

Wilcox was shuttled to the bench earlier this week as a way to get freshman Tony Wroten and 7-footer Aziz N'Diaye in the starting lineup together. Wilcox still came through with his highest point total since scoring 24 last season against UCLA, making 8 of 11 shots and 6 of 8 3-pointers ? matching his career-high in 3-pointers made.

Perhaps most important, Wilcox scored 13 during a key second-half run for Washington (8-5, 2-0 Pac-12) after the Ducks had trimmed a double-digit deficit down to four.

"If he starts, if he comes off the bench, if he plays with any combinations that we have, he's going to do the same thing," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said of Wilcox.

In his first game coming off the bench this season on Thursday night, Wilcox played 30 minutes and finished with 15 points. He was even more dynamic on Saturday in 33 minutes, which is more than his average for the season.

Wroten added 17 points, five assists and four rebounds, while Abdul Gaddy added 12 points and Terrance Ross had 11, and Washington shot nearly 54 percent.

"It's like you pick your poison if everybody is shooting like that," Gaddy said. "But it's all about ball movement."

E.J. Singler led Oregon (10-4, 1-1) with 20 points, 13 coming in the first half. But the Ducks shot just 32 percent and leading scorer Devoe Joseph was 1 of 13 shooting and finished with just four points, 10 below his season average.

But the Ducks continued to hang around, closing within 48-44 in the second half before Wilcox nearly put together the Huskies' decisive run by himself.

Washington led 47-36 when a backcourt dustup between Wroten and Oregon's Olu Ashaolu resulted in double technicals for Ashaolu and Washington's Darnell Gant. The technical also proved to be the start of Oregon's final surge as the Ducks scored eight of the next nine points to pull within 48-44 after consecutive easy baskets for Singler.

Romar called timeout and after the teams exchanged turnovers, Wilcox connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to put the lead back to 54-46. Even after a timeout, the run continued with Wilcox scoring on a left-handed baseline drive and Ross hitting a crossover, step-back 3 to give the Huskies a 59-46 lead. Wilcox added another baseline basket and Gaddy capped the run with an open 3-pointer from the wing to give the Huskies their biggest lead to that point at 64-49 with 7:59 left.

Washington led by as many as 19 in the closing minutes.

Oregon was trying for a 2-0 conference start after knocking off Washington State on Thursday night. It didn't help that Joseph couldn't make anything. Joseph came in averaging 14.7 points for the Ducks, but his one basket came midway through the first half. It was a theme throughout the Oregon lineup as the Ducks got plenty of looks from the perimeter, but couldn't make Washington pay for slow defensive rotations. The Ducks were just 5 of 23 on 3-pointers after coming in as a 36 percent 3-point-shooting team. .

Ashaolu, who had 23 points and 10 rebounds against Washington State, was limited to six points and 12 rebounds. It got so bad for the Ducks that Carlos Emory couldn't convert a breakaway dunk attempt with 2 minutes left, losing his grip of the ball as he went up for the uncontested slam.

Oregon coach Dana Altman kept his players in the locker room for an extended period after the game.

"Disappointing performance. We've obviously got a lot of work to do," Altman said. "We couldn't guard their dribble drives, we gave up a lot of open 3s. There wasn't much defense there at all."

Oregon had its chances, especially in the first half when Washington's defensive rotations were sluggish and gave the Ducks looks at open perimeter shots. The Ducks were just 2 of 14 on 3-point attempts in the first half and finished 5 of 23. Singler made 4 of 9 shots in the first half, while the rest of the Ducks were a combined 7 for 25.

Garrett Sim added 13 points for Oregon but no one else showed up to help offensively.

"They took us out of a lot of our sets and we didn't move the ball as well as we did against Washington State and it showed in our shooting percentage," Singler said.

Cyclone Thane hits India's southeast coast

A severe cyclone in India brought lashing winds and heavy rain to the southeastern coastline on Friday, killing at least 11 people, the Associated Press reported.

Cyclone Thane uprooted trees, ripped off traffic signals from their posts and sent shards of glass and debris flying through the air, CNN reported. The Cyclone hit the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry, flooding many roads and cutting off cell phone service.

The India Meteorological Department said the cyclone was centered in the Indian Ocean, just 22 miles from Puducherry. Winds reached up to 85 miles per hour in the coastal town of Cuddalore, where 11 people died mostly due to wall collapses and electrocution, the AP reported.

Emergency crews have been working to restore power supplies and clear roads of fallen trees and downed power lines, CNN reported.

Cyclone Thane did manage to leave the southern Andhra Pradesh coast untouched, the Times of India reported. Railroads and airports shut down, either canceling or rescheduling service, and fisherman were advised not to go out to sea.

When Cyclone Laila hit last year, at least 23 people were killed on the southern coast, the BBC reported. It was the worst storm to hit Andhra Pradesh in 14 years and led to more than 50,000 people being evacuated. Andhra Pradesh was hit by its worst cyclone in 1977, when more than 10,000 people were killed, the BBC reported.

Wenger: Henry will sign for Arsenal for 2 months

By STEVE DOUGLAS

updated 7:43 a.m. ET Dec. 30, 2011

LONDON - Three weeks after being immortalized in a bronze statue outside Arsenal's stadium, Thierry Henry was close to sealing an emotional return to the Premier League club that made him a global superstar.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said Friday that the former France captain will sign for the team in a two-month loan deal once an insurance agreement is reached with the New York Red Bulls, Henry's club in Major League Soccer.

Wenger is turning to Henry, who scored a club-record 226 goals in eight years at Arsenal between 1999-2007, to fill the gap left by the impending departures of Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh to the African Cup of Nations next month.

"To cover for two months is ideal," Wenger said. "He has the experience and the quality. He knows the club and can help the players on and off the pitch."

Henry, who has been training with Arsenal during the MLS offseason, established himself as a star in his first stint at the London club before moving to Spanish giant Barcelona.

His legacy could be enhanced further if he can inspire Wenger's side in a crucial period of matches through to his return to the United States in March, before which he could play a big role in seven league games and the first leg of Arsenal's Champions League last-16 match against AC Milan.

"I know it can only be positive," said Wenger, who converted Henry from a skinny winger to a muscly striker after signing him from Italian team Juventus in 1999.

"He has exceptional talent ? he is a very intelligent man and has a desire to help the club. But it is difficult to measure how positive an influence he is."

Henry's debut is likely to come against second-tier side Leeds in the third round of the FA Cup on Jan. 9, although there is an outside chance he could play a part in the league match at Fulham on Monday.

What is for sure, Arsenal fans will not witness the Henry of old, when he terrorized English defenses with his pace, touch and power to help Arsenal to two Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

Nudged out to the periphery in the last of his three seasons at Barcelona, where he was often shunted out of position to the left wing, Henry has spent the past year in the more relaxed environs of the MLS.

Instead, Wenger is relying on Henry's intelligence to see him through.

"You and I are conscious that he is 34 years old but he has not lost his class or his brain," Wenger said. "That will be just enough for us."

Henry will likely be the understudy to Robin van Persie, who has belatedly taken over the Frenchman's mantle as Arsenal's talismanic attacker and scored 16 league goals this season. In 2011, Van Persie has scored 34 times in the league and needs two goals against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday to equal the Premier League record in a calendar year, set by Alan Shearer in 1995.

Arsenal's other option up front is South Korea captain Park Ju-young, who has struggled for first-team chances since his move from Monaco in the offseason. Russia captain Andrey Arshavin, barely used by Wenger this season, and England winger Theo Walcott also can act as makeshift strikers but are more accustomed to playing out wide.

Renowned for his expertise at bringing youth prospects through to the first team, it won't be the first time Wenger has turned to a former star to help Arsenal on a short-term basis.

In March, Jens Lehmann ? like Henry, one of Arsenal's "Invincibles" who helped the team go through the 2003-04 league season unbeaten ? was signed to help solve a goalkeeping shortage.
