Apple Fans Get Screwed By Hoax

The Swedish production company Day4 say they are disturbed by how readily people believe anything they read on the web these days, especially as they can easily check tech reporters' facts using tools such as Google. To prove their point, the company decided to conduct an experiment that would drive it home, and with rumours of the iPhone 5 in full swing, it decided to pull a fast one on Apple, its fanboys and reporters.

"Today, thanks to the internet, we consider ourselves much more enlightened. We can discuss and examine the source in a way that was not possible in the past. But are we really aware of all information flowing up over the net?" the company said on its website.

Advertisement Day4 created a rendering of a screw with a weird, asymmetrical head. The screw was supposedly designed to keep Apple users from opening their products. With Apple's track record of keeping controlled environments, this wasn't too hard to believe.

Day4 had a plausible story, and now it just needed a way to get it out.

The company attached the photo of the screw rendering to a fake email that read as though it was from a source within Apple. Day4 then uploaded the picture to Imgur, and shared it as a link on Reddit in a post titled "A friend took a photo a while ago at that fruit company, they are obviously even creating their own screws.?

"Then we waited ..." Day4 said on its website.

It took less than 12 hours before the Reddit post got to tech reporters.

Cult of Mac was the first to post, and it was shortly followed with stories by Yahoo, Wired and MacWorld as well as videos on YouTube and talk on social media.

Day4 managed to fool a good portion of the tech world, and in the process it made some observations about how rumours are perceived. The company said the screw rumour became more easily believed as it was reported by sources other than the original Reddit post.

There was skepticism among journalists but the rumour was still reported. Most people commenting on articles, however, didn't pause - deeming the reports accurate, Day4 said. And on social media sites, "people talk about the image like it's a truth. Critical thinking vapourised".

Day4 apologised to anyone who felt cheated by the hoax, but the company said it hoped its experiment causes people to become more thoughtful about what they see on the internet.

"In this case, it was about a new type of screw, a relatively unimportant news," the company said. "But for us it raises a concern about how we consume information today."

New method to remove phosphorus from wastewater

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? A professor at Michigan State University is part of a team developing a new method of removing phosphorus from wastewater -- a problem seriously affecting lakes and streams across the United States.

In addition, Steven Safferman, an associate professor of biosystems and agricultural engineering, and colleagues at Columbus, Ohio, based-MetaMateria Technologies, are devising a cost-effective way of recovering the phosphorus, which then can be reused for fertilizer products.

Although its use is regulated in many states, including Michigan, in items such as detergents and fertilizer, phosphorus is part of all food and remains a critical problem as it is always present in human and animal wastes.

Discharge from human and industrial wastewater and runoff into lakes and streams can cause what is known as eutrophication -- making the water unsuitable for recreational purposes and reducing fish populations -- as well as causing the growth of toxic algae.

What MetaMateria Technologies and Safferman have figured out and tested over the past 10 years is how to produce a media, enhanced with nanoparticles composed of iron, that can more efficiently remove larger amounts of phosphorus from water.

"Phosphorus that is dissolved in wastewater, like sugar in water, is hard to remove," Safferman said. "We found that a nano-media made with waste iron can efficiently absorb it, making it a solid that can be easily and efficiently removed and recovered for beneficial reuse."

Safferman added there are indications that their method of phosphorus retrieval is much more cost effective than processing phosphate rock.

"Research suggests that it is significantly cheaper to recover phosphorus this way. So why would you mine phosphorus?" he asked. "And, at the same time, you're helping to solve a serious environmental problem."

The material should be commercially available for use within two years, said J. Richard Schorr, MetaMateria CEO.

"Phosphorus is a finite material," Schorr said "Analyses show that the supply of phosphorus may become limited within the next 25 to 50 years. This is an economical way to harvest and recycle phosphorus."

This research is funded, in part, by a National Science Foundation Small Business Innovative Research Grant.

Thankfully such long number strings will soon be a worry of the past?? because?Google is gradually?starting to roll out?"vanity URLs" to users.

Saurabh Sharma?? a Google product manager?? explains in a Google+ post?that?the?new URLS (which look something like http://google.com/+britneyspears or http://google.com/+toyota) are?being offered to a "limited number of verified profiles and pages" first. Don't start stomping your feet if you don't fit that criteria though, because Sharma adds that "over time [Google plans] to offer custom URLs to many more brands and individuals."

No word as to how Google plans to let people call dibs on their preferred URLs just yet. For now, I'm assuming that snagging http://google.com/+rosa will involve either battling every Rosa in the world or baking cupcakes for every member of the Google+ team.

As an aside, it's worth noting that Sharma's?announcement?isn't actually the first time we're seeing custom URLs on Google+ profiles. Liberia arrests six over Ivory Coast border attack

MONROVIA (Reuters) - Liberian troops have captured six men they believe carried out raids on border posts in neighboring Ivory Coast this week, Liberia's defense minister said on Wednesday.

Gunmen attacked border checkpoints manned by the Ivorian military near the town of Toulepleu in Ivory Coast's volatile western borderlands on Monday morning. The fighting lasted much of the day, and one Ivorian soldier was wounded.

Liberia dispatched troops to its side of the frontier during the clashes in an effort to contain the violence and arrested the men as they attempted to flee into Liberian territory.

"These men were trying to enter Liberia illegally with their weapons when they were arrested. These men did not deny their involvement in the attack," Defence Minister Brownie Samukai told Reuters.

"From the identities of the six men arrested ... all of them are Ivorians. They are in detention, and the ministry of justice is working on the prosecution process," he said.

Ivory Coast, the world's top cocoa grower, has blamed fighters loyal to former President Laurent Gbagbo for a series of attacks since June that have heightened fears of renewed insecurity a year after a brief civil war killed 3,000 people.

Gbagbo is currently awaiting trial on war crimes charges at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Raids on police and military installations in and around Ivory Coast's commercial capital Abidjan last week killed 10 soldiers. Some 20 people, including seven United Nations peacekeepers, died in June in fighting along the border, which Ivory Coast blamed on pro-Gbagbo fighters based in Liberia.

Around 200,000 Ivorians fled into Liberia during Ivory Coast's civil war last year, which erupted after Gbagbo refused to recognize the victory of rival Alassane Ouattara in a presidential election in late 2010. They were accompanied by thousands of armed pro-Gbagbo soldiers and militias as well as their Liberian mercenary allies.

Samukai rejected the idea that Monday's border raid had been launched from Liberian soil however and promised to work with the Ivorian government to ensure the alleged gunmen are prosecuted.

"It is an internal Ivorian conflict. This has to be made clear," he said. "As you know, we work closely with the Ivorian authorities and will cooperate with them."

He said Liberia was awaiting a formal extradition request from Ivory Coast.

Liberia transferred 41 suspected Ivorian fighters to Ivory Coast earlier this year. Monrovia is also currently holding several Liberian mercenaries believed to have carried out the ambush of U.N. soldiers in June. Ivory Coast has requested their extradition for prosecution.
