Movie Review: Here Comes the Boom | MMAOnline.com

Of course MMA is still fairly new in the broad scheme of things, but it was inevitable that the fast-growing sport would eventually find tribute in a comedy. The fact that said comedy would star the likes of Bas Rutten, Mark Dellagrotte, Joe Rogan, Salma Hayak and still only be rated PG was not as predictable.

?Here Comes the Boom? is an underdog story of fighting for a purpose. Kevin James stars as Scott Voss, a middle school biology teacher who?s antics bare resemblance to that of Jack Black in the movie ?School of Rock.? The quirky, unmotivated teacher whose students appear smarter than he is just goes minimally through the motions until a turn of events changes his perspective. In this case, it is the unfunded music program of fellow teacher Marty Streb, played by Henry Winkler.

Circumstances force James, the unlikely fighter with nothing more than collegiate wrestling background, into some of the most awkward cage situations that the Massachusetts underground MMA scene could dream of. He eventually ends up on a much bigger stage with the likes of Rutten, Dellagrotte and Winkler in his corner.

The criticisms that arise in most MMA movies are evident here as well, most of which involving the unlikelihood of the events. Up and coming fighters often have trouble finding promoters to pay more than $500 or so for big sanctioned events early in their career. That being the case, thousands of dollars coming in from an unsanctioned backyard event, surrounded by chickens in the rain is not the norm. Also, the portrayal that a fighter could fight professionally back to back weekends repeatedly for months and months with minimal training, no deep concern for diet or major injury is also a falsity. I also don?t ever recall hearing about Joe Rogan personally negotiating deals with fighters for Dana White?

All that being said, you can?t really get too nit picky with a comedy, especially one with the heartfelt motivational message kindred to that of ?The Mighty Ducks? or ?Little Giants? meshed with the likes of ?Warriors? and ?Never Back Down? and maybe a little ?Kung Fu Panda.?

Don?t give up, fight to the last round and ignore the predictability of the ending. ?It is a family safe introduction to the sport, without the sex appeal or focus on violence. Take it for what it is and just enjoy.
